223... spitzer or ballistic tip

I'm in the load development stage for my 223 varmint rifle. It has a 1 in 12 twist, and 22" barrel. I figure this twist will limit me to something between a 45 and 52 grain projectile. Which would you use for coyotes, the spitzer or ballistic tip? Which would be more affective? Which would have more penetration? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

I generally use a 70 grain Nosler Ballistic tip for what you are contimplating. These guys penetrate well and really spread upon impact. Spitzers are okay, I just prefer the BT's.

oops, I was thinking of my 243. I use the 52 grainers for varmint in the 223.

Your right regarding the twist rate 1/12 wont stabilize bullet weights above 55 grains. Either one will perform adequately on coyotes so it a matter of cost since you'll more than likely be shooting < 200 yards anyway with those weights. If you can I would change the barrel to a minimum 1/9 twist with my preference being 1/6 twist so you can use heavier bullets like Berger VLD's.

My old 788 1 in 12 .223 and my Ruger 77 1 in 14 .22-250 shoot quite accurately with 60 grain flatbase bullets. Not a huge difference, but it gives you some more choices.

My M77 shoots the 50 and 55 grain Ballistic Tip very good. Groups are under an inch at 100 yards constantly. I use AA 2230 and Olin 748 powders. Other 223's with a 1 in 12 twist have shot the hornady 60 grain flatbase with very good accuracy.

I've had my best luck with Sierra 52 gr BTHP with IMR4198.
I think Sierra's stock # is 1410.

I have a .22 Ratdog (.22PPC cut 0.070 short) that likes Bart's 52 grainers. About 3600 fps, and it'll shoot under a quarter inch.

My Savage .22-250 gets 55 gr. Berger MEFs (more of a varmint bullet) and H380... Shoots in the mid-threes...
