1911 Help

I previously ran 100 flawless rounds thru my new Colt CCG 1911, but today I had an issue. I let the range officer shoot the first mag of the day and he had a ftf in the middle of the mag. I couldn't see how or what happened. I went on to shoot 115 rounds without issue using ball and HP.

I did incorporate a new mag today but they are all Colt factory mags and I don't know if the hang up was in the new mag. Any ideas on what could have caused this?

Don't sweat it.
It was probably an errant cartridge or the guy loosened his grip.
It isn't like Colt knows anything about building 1911s or anything.

It's new. It doesn't NEED to break in. But it runs better after 500rds. Don't worry about it.

Agreed. No worries over one FTF.

What brand ammo was used?

The ftf occurred using S&B ammo. The HP that fed fine was Remington Golden Sabre.

Keep shooting and enjoying. Hard to diagnose a 1 and done issue.

+1 What Nathan said, hard to diagnose a non recurring malf.

My Colt Rail Gun has jammed once, failed to chamber a round after over 300 rounds with no cleaning for about 3 months (I purposely neglected to clean it). Wiped the feed ramp clean and contined shooting smoothly for another 3 mags or so (ran out of ammo). That one was easy to diagnose, the gun was downright FILTHY.

One suggestion I have for you is to ditch the factory mags, idk how Colt's are because I never used them. I had about 5 McCormick mags when I got my Colt and only one of them has given me an issue, bent feed lip.

Wilson Mags are considered the best by a lot of 1911 nuts, McCormicks are pretty reliable but one wore out on my after about 3 years averaging about 30 rounds through it a month (100rds/month split among the three mags I bring to each range trip).

Just curious, the FTF, was it a failure to fire or failure to feed? If the problem was a failure to feed how was the round feeding hung up?

Like others here have said I would NOT worry much about it since you shot over a hundred rounds after the problem.

One malfunction could be anything, and that's why pistols sometimes malfunction.

Reason number 532 to practice malfunction clearance drills.
Sooner or later they all screw up, one way or another.
How come that seldom happens much during a practice session.
They usually do it in the middle of a match, for some reason.

The S&B ammo is a bit on the weak side so that, and maybe a loose grip, could have caused the failure to feed.
