Winchester 101

Years ago, as a kid, I had a Winchester 101.

Now, 35 years later, I have a 101.

I had forgotten how good it feels in my hands.

My pics are rather lousy. It's hard to capture the subdued beauty of this 101.

They have always been excellent shotguns and back then, I just couldn't see spending the money they were asking. I have a good hunting buddy that has collected quite a few of them. They are great hunters and he once loaned me one for quail, while visiting him down south. Sure was different hunting a little quail with a high priced shotgun. Congratulations !! ....

This one was made in 1965, and is in very good shape for its age.

It makes my Red Label feel like a log.

YEs, 101's are sweet. Now you need a model 21 to go with it. Equally sweet.

That's a beautiful gun. I enjoy seeing these pictures a lot more than a black Mossberg with a flashlight and a laser pointer on it.

Whenever I look at pics of old classic shotguns, my mind conjures up the smell of Hoppe's. As a kid, that was all my dad ever used. Funny how the brain associates smell with sight.

In hindsight, they were the bargains of the day. I bought two M-101s, a 12-ga Skeet in 1968 ($325) and .410-bore Skeet a few years later ($340).They were about four or five times the price of an entry level pump back then. Perhaps $1,000 to $1,250 at today's prices.

They were bargains. Still are. I would put them up against some of the more expensive B guns, that cost a couple grand.

Have a 20g in skt/skt and a 12g in F/M. Great guns. The Japanese co that built the older ones also built some Weatherby's and more. Not the Citori maker (Miruko). Now make in Belgium.

I like my Red Labels but the 101 gets my vote between the two. Plus, I have a couple of older Red Labels (400 prefix s/n) which Ruger "no longer supports" and that pees me off more than I can say! Bill, Sr please come rescue your company!!!!
