Don't feel bad. I used to have trouble racking the slide and locking it back too until I learned that it's really a matter of technique and not strength. Watch this video, it's very helpful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbayNc6D9HY. I'm a middle aged woman and if I can do it you can too!

Empty mag would work except to me that is very much against how I was trained to clear a weapon. It sounds like you're a righty so try this. Instead of gripping the slide with thumb and first finger from the rear of the slide and the rest of your hand not doing anything.. Hold the gun in your strong hand and bring the gun across your body and grip the slide with all of your weak hand (keep your palm out of the ejection port, it could give you a not very playful pinch). Use both arms pushing in opposite directions to work the slide and hit the slide catch lever with your strong hand thumb.
Edited to add: Just like the video in the post right above mine. Last edited by Habaz72; March 25, 2013 at 01:30 AM. |

I did it I did it!!! And the first try, it was easy!!
You know what I was doing wrong? I wasn't holding down the safety grip; once I did that, the slide locked right into place, and I was able to fieldstrip it. Woohoo! Thanks for all the great advice, guys! |

My XDM is extremely easy to strip. Now a 3" 1911 is another story...until after you've done it a few times.

Also, I had a jam today, my first one with the Springfield. I remembered what I learned here. I took a slow breath, stayed calm, removed the magazine, and worked the slide until the round came out.

Not that I was able to help out here, justplainpossum, but I'm glad to hear that you got it worked out.

I'd take another look at the instructions, or find a YouTube video demonstration ... I have an XDm-9 and an XDs and both are the easiest guns I own to take down and reassemble for cleaning ... now if you want a gun that's hard, get one of the Kimber Ultra series or a Ruger 22lr ... those puppies will have you tearing out your hair .... well, if I had any hair ...

Bikerbill, I have a feeling it's easier for guys, but I think I've got it down now. Actually, I had a bigger problem with the bolt and spring -- it got away from me and nearly took out the flat screen!!
