Having trouble finding Powder bullets etc

I am having a heck of a time finding stores that have reloading components in the Denver area. Am I stuck to online orders? Anyone from Denver/co might know of a good source? I've been to sportmens warehouse and they seem picked dry, Bass pro with no luck.. None of the gun stores cater to reloading that I have found

Buying on line will get what you want, when you want it, and you'll get it cheaper in larger quantities. A search of this forum will give you idea where others buy from. The choices will overwhelm you.

Good luck. Hard to understand. My small town has about six independant gun shops that carry reloading supplies.

Friend of mine bought the *empty* display canister of W231 from Sportsman's Warehouse on Sunday. Didn't notice it was empty and the store can't be bothered to mark the display cans. (still, a silly mistake by all involved. Reminded me of the Monty Python skit about the Cheese Shop that has no cheese.)

I've seen powder at Jax and at Rocky Mtn Shooter supply in Ft. Collins.
So you might just try some of the non-big-box stores.

I bought some HP-38 a few months ago at SW but they've been spotty on having good supply. They seem to get new stock on Fridays (Loveland store).

And online/mail order seems to work too.

Sportsmans Warehouse here goes through odd draughts sometimes. Particularly with powders. Talk to the people around the firearms counter and find out when they typically receive their shipments. I only purchase the HAZmat stuff (primers, powder) retail, aside from the odd bit here & there. Everything else is purchased online.
In a major metro area like Denver, you should be able to find what you need with a bit of searching.

You could give this guy a try: Dad's Wholesale. There's also Gander Mountain, but they're expensive.

Order from Powder Valley. A couple pounds of powder is enough to off-set the hazmat charges. Get 1000, or 2000 primers and a couple boxes of bullets and you'll be money ahead, easily.

I don't understand why you do not rejoice in online retailing--the prices of components are a lot less than if the online retailers were not available to us..........especially if you look at Graf and Powder Valley and Bruno and--the list goes on and on---like my mama told me--you gotta shop around--and what makes THAT easier than the www???????

WARNING--geezer alert---WARNING--why I remember long before there was ever an Al Gore--let alone HIS internet--when the only place that I could buy components was the Western Auto--and the prices--adjusted for today's 2 cent dollar--were 50% or more higher than they are today--and then gasoline was 18 cents a gallon--you could afford to drive to the range but not shoot---you got paid $3.00 an hour if you had a good job-- a union job---------END OF GEEZER ALERT

In keeping with the spirit of your name, are you posting a trick question?

What is a "Powder bullet"????? or is it just a punctuation error???

I am in the Denver area the best source for reloading supplies I can find is Tanner Gun Show but that's only one weekend a month. Sportsmans Warehouse has been the next bets source but there stock is hit and miss. I was in there just before Christmas and they fully stocked by the first of March they were out of everything. I was in there two weeks ago and they seemed to be building up there stock again.

Im gonna get the bullets on the net and see what powder I can find in the stores. I would like to start with a pound of powder until I get well into the learning curve. I haven't even set up my press, I have been reading the Lyman manual and just bought the load book for .40 and been on here everyday. Im thinking of getting another manual as well just haven't figured out which one.

I like the Lee manual myself. Lots of info and I turn to it often.

Try Montana Gold or Rocky Mountain Reloading for handgun bullets. Rocky Mountain sells Montana Gold bullets, often for less than you can get them direct from Montana Gold and the owner is a member here.

Since you have the Lyman book, that's a good starting point. My other book is the Lee Modern reloading 2nd edition. I find it covers the gaps pretty well.
Don't ignore the free online resources. Go to the various powder manufacturers sites and download their data. If the manufacturer of your bullets put their data on the internet, by all means grab it. The more sources you can come up with for a specific load, the less chance of creating a problem.
You will see a number of loads posted on the various forums as well. Some are better than others. If you decide to use them, sanity check them against other published data. Make sure they fall within established norms. There are some seriously hot loads wandering around the internet.
For ease of use, you may wish to stick with common name brand components initially. The fewer variables you deal with, the less chance you will run into trouble starting out.

Sometimes the net is what you gotta do

I live in Michigans Upper Pensula, I don't live in the middle of nowhere but I can see from my front porch. I don't have a local store to supply powder, brass or bullets or primers. When I travel to major population centers I buy my powder, primers. I normally but my bullets fom cablaes, cheaper then dirt, etc. You get better deals buying in bulk.

I went to a few places in Denver back in 2009 when it was hard to find components anywhere. I don't remember all the places now, but I do remember Dad's Wholesale and Rocky Mountain Guns and Ammo had some stuff that nobody else had.

I have bought stuff from Powder Valley before. In my case, I found that I needed to buy about 6 pounds of powder to break even in terms of cost when paying for shipping with the Haz Mat fee as compared to the best prices locally. That's doable for rifle calibers where I average about 130 loads per pound. But for pistols, a pound of powder might give me 1000 rounds. That's a lot of powder when first starting out.

For pistol Win 231 or H-38 for 357 or 44 mag Alliant-2400 for rifle H-4895 or IMR-4895 for 223 or 5.56 then H-335

That's just a start.

For the .40 is 165gr bullet a good target round? or should I stick with 180gr?

For the .40, I've found that either 165 or 180 work fine. I've been using 180 gr cast Missouri Bullets mostly.

Colorado sales tax

If you have to order components online be aware that you will have to pay sales tax as well as shipping,if you order from a dealer that also has a retail outlet in the state, like Cabelas. Thank you former governor Ritter

Green Mountain Guns in Lakewood usually has primers, powder, and lead cast bullets on hand in most handgun calibers.

They are a good shop with decent prices. Plus they advertise on Colorado Rockies games on KOA radio.
