Savage Model 25 Rifles

Does anyone here have any experience with these rifles? They are pretty ugly but I am considering purchasing one in 17 Hornet.

If anyone has any information about these drop a line.

I have a Savage M25 with the thumb hole stock in .204 and all I can say is, it's a shooter! I shot sub MOA with it today at 200 yds. The detachable mag is one of the best I've felt on a rifle! The accutrigger is unbelievably awesome, just like on another savage with the accutrigger. I wouldn't give my 25 up for anything!

I don't have one, because I'm waiting for one to appear in .222 remington. Everything I've seen on the forums and in the magazines, indicates that the rifle is an amazing performer - three shot cloverleaf groups at 100 yards are not uncommon.

Some owners have complained about a hard bolt lift, but that should go away with use or some minor polishing of the cocking cam in the bolt body. So it looks like the only bad thing about the rifle is it's limited availability, but, right now, I think that's true of just about everything shooting related.

Beauty is as beauty does. I once had a remington 788, which was hardly a beauty queen. It was a tack driver. I wish I still had it, but I lost the 788 years ago from theft.

Yes, they are ugly (like all Savage rifles), but they shoot well (like most Savage rifles).

I wouldn't hold my breath for Savage (or anyone else for that matter) to chamber rifles in 222. Buy a 223 and move on.

@Scorch: You're right. Sadly the .222 remington may be headed for obsolescence. However, for 2013, savage announced the .222 remington chambering in their model 25 and it is listed on savage's web site. Although who knows when it will hit the shelves. Ruger has also announced the .222 remington chambering for this year in their No. 1A. So, hope is out there.

I had one it .204. It was hell on gophers and p-dogs out to 250. I would love to have one in .17 Hornet.

I hear this all the time yet no one has time to point out any features to prove this compared to other comparable rifles. The Savages (even those with that blasted barrel nut! Oh the humanity!) look just as good and sometimes better than their competition. And no, their competition isn't Annies and Coopers.

I've admired the 25's from a distance for some time now. Just never have the loose money at the right time.

I had a Savage 25 in .17 H Hornet. Stiff bolt lift, feeding jams, so-so accuracy in a small window of barrel cleanliness with factory ammo, and surprisingly loud report. Decided I had several other varmint calibers that were close ballisticly so it was traded for the laminated stock model in .22 Hornet. Different animal altogether: smooth operation, accurate and really not too bad to look at.
If I wanted another .17HH it would be a C-Z 527.

I think I have found a CZ, so if I do go the 17 Hornet route I'll probably opt for it. A little more money but well worth it in my opinion.

I agree all savage rifles really are ugly, they simply don't have the refined aesthetics that most, even moderately priced rifles do. I will not argue that most all shoot well but I simply cant buy a rifle just because it shoots well.
