garand gas tube
Nobody seemed to know the answer to this quesstion on art of the rifle so maybe I will have luck here. How do I tell the difference between a narrow base and wide base gas tube and are they interchangeable, or is the right tube dictated by the barrel which is dictated by the receiver or... what? My garand receiver is a very low 1 million serial number SA and looks by info on the net to have been built around December of 42. Thanks

I can't help you on the differences between the bases- but unless you have an old gas-trap then all gas parts are interchangeable.

wide base vs narrow base
I don't have the measurements handy but you can swap out wide vs narrow. You just have to use the corresponding sight(wide base or narrow base)

Wide base and narrow base is reference to the sight mounting dovetail area on the gas cylinder. Some are wide and some are narrow. Yes, they are interchangeable.
