When did suppressors become illegal in the USA?

I never post in NFA. NFA laws are one of those things that I try to avoid as they are frustrating to me....so please enlighten me!

Never, as far as federal law is concerned, though they are illegal in some states or areas.

The National Firearms Act (NFA) included silencers (the law uses that word, not the currently fashionable "suppressors") in its definition of a "firearm" that had to be registered and its transfer taxed. That law was passed in 1938. The NFA was included in the Gun Control Act of 1968 as Title II, but it is still commonly called the NFA.

I am new to silencers, have made two and have a few forms still pending but have learned lots in the last few years. 12 states do not allow unlicensed civilians to possess silencers, the rest all allow possession with some prohibiting ownership unless there are registered (duh). TX bans possession but registration is an affirmative defense to prosecution.

The best place to start to learn is the ATF homepage. http://www.atf.gov
BATFE FAQ; http://www.atf.gov/content/Firearms/..._industry_tabs

NFA handbook; http://www.atf.gov/publications/fire...ook/index.html

ATF firearm industry page; http://www.atf.gov/content/Firearms/firearms-industry

Firearm laws reference guide. Anything you wanted to know about gun federal gun control is probably in here. http://www.atf.gov/files/publication...f-p-5300-4.pdf

1934, not 1938.

You are right, Bill, my error. 1938 was the Federal Firearms Act which established the federal licensing system for manufacturers, importers, and dealers but didn't affect any firearms directly. The FFA became Title I of the GCA '68.
