My First Sig; P229R 9mm
well I should have known better than to borrow a friends p229, now I have a new favorite CCW/HD gun. This gun easily outshoots me while making me look like a much better shot lol, and now I have a very gently used Sig P229R on layaway at a local pawn shop. Sig P229R 9mm + 2 13rd mags for $600 how did I do?

Not a bad deal at all. Congrats! The P229 was a favorite of mine for a long time. I prefer the P226 and P220 these days. The P226 grip is actually slightly thinner than the 229, just a little longer. I enjoy the flat fitting 18rd mags.
You can get flat fitting 15rd mags for your P229 as well. Mec-Gar makes them. They are 100% as reliable as the factory mags - MecGar used to make Sigs factory mags, actually.

So how does the 229 compare to the M11-A1? They are essentially the same are they not? The M11 merely has some upgrades?

Welcome new Sig owner. The best way to acclimate yourself to the thin air in Siglandia is to dry fire in DA until it gets as easy as breathing. Don't try to stage the trigger. Just pull it on through. Do as many reps as you can while holding a steady sight picture. Shoot it in DA at the range by de-cocking between shots until your DA hit percentage is high. One day soon, you'll realize that you love that Sig! Not everybody has the time or patience to spend a couple months learning a trigger, thank God. I get more gently used Sigs at good prices that way! Can you say Phan Bois?

The REAL M11 is a P228, which uses the stamped slide like the old German sigs. The new M11 used a milled stainless slide like the P229. The older P228s are amazing guns. Perfect balance.

I like my friend's older 229. Fairly compact and just feels substantial. Recoil is well absorbed. I was rather surprised how chunky the grip is.

The M11-A1 also has the P229-1 frame with the wider magazine well (as do the newer 9mm P229s) and can take the 15rd 9mm P229-1 mags. The M11-A1 slide is also narrower, has the long extractor, and the full-height cocking serrations, as compared to your "older" model P229R.
BTW congratulations! Your P229R is a very fine gun although I prefer the really older ones without the rail. Last edited by wgsigs; January 14, 2014 at 10:21 PM. |
