rsilvers,
Tomorrow I will have the opportunity to shoot the 300. A buddy of mine just picked up an AAC upper (for his M&P lower), and we're hitting an outdoor range (200 yarder). I saw at my LGS today UMC 115 grain for 12.00... still pretty reasonable. Last edited by mitranoc; November 9, 2012 at 10:35 PM. |

Here's a much better representation of hunting bullets in the common AR calibers from a 16" barrel. The 30-30 and 223 are from a 20" barrel.
300bo makes a fun subgun round for IPSC or plinking, but when you need to kill critters, it's barely above the 223.

I love my 6.8. More accurate than my 5.56 or 300 BLK. Brass is expensive for reloading. $60/100 SSA.
But with 300BLK you can choose anywhere from 110gr to 240gr bullet and you can form your own brass from 5.56 and use the same mags and BCG from your 5.56 |

I am absolutely not trying to talk you out of one, because they look great to me, but...you could just buy a couple of boxes of Barnes 55gr TSX and probably get the same terminal performance. Either way, have fun.

It would be cheaper and easier for me to do a 300 blackout set-up (same mags, BCG, cheaper ammo, and more plentiful in my area). At this point in time I do not do reloads.
But, the 6.8 ballistics might trump everything else? Last edited by mitranoc; November 12, 2012 at 10:17 PM. |

I've decided on a Bison Armory 6.8 upper. Now, it's whether to go with the 16" recon or 16" recon subsonic? Pro's or con's on either?
I'm waiting for my activation on the 6.8 forum to pick their brians as well. |

Looks like the 1:11 is the winner then. Maybe in the future I will consider supressed, but not at this point in time.

Don't discount Bison Armory because of the 1:7 twist. They also have a great lineup of 1:11 twist uppers and complete guns. They are dedicated to the 6.8 and probably more knowledgable about it then any other manufacturer.

In what way did I discount Bison? That's who I'm buying my upper from.

One of the benefits of the AR platform is parts availability and interchangeability. For many that is the appeal of the .300 BO. Literally, all you need is a a different barrel and different ammo.
To say the 6.8 or the .300 has better ballistics than the other ignores many aspects of ballistics. Either is suitalbe for the intended purpose of hog hunting. When you factor in the probable distances, energy, blood trail, etc. you are probably at a wash at best, but in my experience, I would go larger diameter over more speed inside of 300 yards. When you look at ammo cost and bullet selection, then of course, the 300 BO holds an edge. Skip all that and just get a .450 BM. |

6.8 benefits from an 18 or 20" barrel a lot.

For primarily a hog gun I wouldn't go for a 20" barrel. I'd go 18" because it splits the difference. If you are really only going to use it for hogs and not much else then go 16". Though IMO if you are buying a 6.8 and don't deer hunt with it every now and again it's a waste.

Good choice on the Bison 1:11. If you reload, AA2200 is the powder of choice for 95-120gr bullets, Nosler 110gr Accubonds and Barnes 95gr TTSX are the preferred hunting bullets. I prefer H4198 for the 85-90gr bullets, but some get better accuracy with Re7.

When it comes to the 6.8 you can't go wrong with either Bison or ARP.

The 16 inch barrel will do fine, and is what most people choose at 6.8 forums

Cool. I'm a couple of weeks away of placing my order. I emailed Ben over the weekend trying to find out the turnaround time?
Still awaiting profile activation from the 6.8 forum. |

Well I'm finding Bison Armory's customer service is not too good. Not returning calls or emails? Whereas AR Precision has been excellent. Makes me wonder if ARP gets my business now?

Maybe I spoke too soon? I received an email response from Bison this morning.
