7mm Rem Mag Recipe for 130gr Sierra HPBT

Howdy all,

Just picked up a box of 130gr Sierra MatchKing HPBT bullets to experiment with in my 7mm Rem Mag.

Looking to see what a good load recipe is for that bullet. I only have H1000 and H4831 on hand and can't seem to find IMR4350 or IMR4064 which would be preferred.

I'll be using Rem 9 1/2LRM primers and either H1000 or H4831 unless I can find IMR4350 or IMR4064. Lyman's 49th has a load for both, I believe. Hornady's 8th has a load starting at 55.5gr of H4831 and 61.9gr of H1000 for their 139gr bullets-no data for 130gr bullets. I'm leery on going by just Lyman's. Saw 2 pounds of IMR4007SSC at Cabela's while I was there but could only find one load book at the store that used that powder for 130gr bullets.

COL will be chamber seated and then shortened by .005" or so.

Loading these into new unfired Rem brass.

Any tips or advice is appreciated, including finding the above powders in the eastern PA area.

For H4831 start at 63 grains and work up toward a max of 66 grains watching for any signs of excess pressure.

Keep us updated on how these shoot. I've been looking at getting the Sierra HPBT in 7mm as well.

Brotherbadger- I've had sierras down this rifle before, Wien I was 12-13. I could hold a half inch group at 100 yards with them, I believe they were 140gr HPBT's. I think they were loaded with H380 or H110. It was a load my step-dads boss cooked up. Haven't shot that load since the divorce many years back. I think I still have the data and targets from load development. I will definitely post up how these 130s shoot as well as the 140s my uncles cooking up for me.

Xlpushy, are you sure that you loaded or have loaded 7 mm rem mag with H110 or H380, these powders seem awful fast for that magnum cartridge. Imr 4350 is probably the fastest that I use with 150 grain bullets, but I use IMR 4831 with 140 grain Accubonds to very nice results. I tried the H4831sc with 150 grain Swift Sirrocco II's and the minimum powder charge gave me "hard bolt lift" so I abandoned it after three shots.

Yes. That's what my uncle said when he looked at the old load data and shot targets.

53.0gr of H380 under a 120gr Speer FB.

Also 47.0, 50.0, and 52.0 gr of H380 under a 140gr Sierra FB

Also used SR4759 at 22.0, 23.0, 24.0gr under a 120gr Speer with rem 9 1/2 primers

These aren't loads I made. These were loads that my step-dad at the time had his boss work up for me.

Given how heavy a rifle I can carry, how far the rifle will shoot, with how much accuracy, and how much power it delivers on the target..... the 7mmRM is the best I have found.

120 gr with H4350 do 3650 fps
150 gr with H4350 do 3375 fps

I think it is a safe interpolation
130 gr with H4350 will do 3550 fps

7mm Rem Mag Recipe for 130gr Sierra HPBT

I have a few old loads in my book from back then. Looking at some of the shot targets in my log book, the loads with SR4759 would run about 1700fps, and it is in fact a load recommended by Speer as a reduced load.

I'm definitely gonna try to track down some IMR4350 since I'll need it for a .30-06 load a bit down the road.

I also found some 140gr Sierra Spitzer BT's that I had given my uncle to work up, but we never got around to it. I'm gonna work a load for them as well. Possibly trying H4831 as well.

oi yi yi. haha

Still can't find any of my desired powders, however a fellow on another forum (PAFOA) may have some H4895 for me. Sierra's 5th tells me 50-56 grains of H4895 for that 130gr bullet. Apparently Hodgdon doesn't make that anymore or doesn't recommend it for the cartridge as I can't find it in their data center online. If I use the H4895 I'll probably start at 51gr and work up in .5gr increments.

Ordered some IMR7828 and IMR4064 from Bruno's. I expect to be waiting a long while for it. Has anybody dealt with them before?

Picked up some IMR4350 this afternoon at a local shop. Anybody have a pet load using this weight bullet and powder combo? I'm thinking of a 59.0 or 60.0gr staring point with the 4350, which is mid-range in Sierra's 5th, and is dead-on as a starting load according to Hodgdon's online data center.

Sidebar-
Also was looking at the variations between published sources, and saw a disturbing bit regarding my heavy game load. I have a load worked and tested thoroughly: 175gr Hornady InterLock over 61.5gr of H4831 and a COL of 3.350" case head to tip of bullet. This load shoots 3/8 inch groups at 100yd and has mild for caliber recoil, no signs of excessive pressure. Data from Hornady's 8th says 59.9gr and Hodgdon's online center shows 58.0gr with a 175 gr Nosler Partition.
My uncle worked the load form some older manuals he had, not sure which ones but they're probably almost as old as I am, but I've seen them listing a max of around 63gr if I recall correct.
Not sure what I'm trying to get at here, but if anybody's got $.02 to chip in on this one, please feel free!

I use IMR 4350, when I load 150 grain Partitions, it seems to like both Ballistic Tips and Partitions.

I used IMR4350 on lighter bullets, but nothing pushed a 175gr Speer Grand Slam like H870 for hunting large critters. I'll have to check my records, but I even remember loading some 100gr HP varmint rounds years ago too.

7mm Rem Mag Recipe for 130gr Sierra HPBT

TimSR-
I'd be curious as to those loads. I've never shot such light bullets out of my 7mmMag. Only ever went as low as 120gr when I was young, think 10 years ago when I was 12.

We have lots of groundhogs around here that I'd love to vaporize.

As long as you are not getting any pressure signs, the load is alright to use IN THAT GUN. Some guns, for whatever reason, like heavier loads than others.

I generally don't load maximum loads because the brass lasts longer but my 7mm likes to be pushed. I've tested everything from 57g to 65g IMR 4350 with 139/140g bullets and the harder I push it the tighter it groups. You'll just have to work up a load for your gun and see what it likes. My 65g load runs about 3260 fps and only drop 9.5 in. to 400 yrds with a 300 yrd zero. Flat like a laser for hunting.

I also just picked up 260 once fired for 50 bones. It helps to BS with people when you're waiting in line. One mans junk is another mans treasure.

These were Hornady #2800 100gr hollow point bullets, with a pointed tip. I loaded them over 61gr IMR4350 and Win Large Rifle Primers. I didn't have a chrony but load data said around 3400fps. If I remember right, that was a very light load for that bullet, and I was trying to minimize recoil for varmint shooting.

I think Speer also made a 115gr pointed hollow point.

I also loaded 160gr PSPBT bullets in front of 79gr H870 and 56.5gr IMR4350, both with excellent accurracy.

The 175gr Speer Grand Slams were loaded with 77gr H870.

7mm Rem Mag Recipe for 130gr Sierra HPBT

Thanks Boomer. That info will be helpful once I start working a new hunting load to move away from my 162gr Hornady SST's. I'm dropping down to 140gr Sierra Spitzer BT's.

As for my 130gr load, I got a chamfer seated dummy round made up. COL of 3.369" which seats that 130gr bullet very shallow. The image below is using the same bullet, just one that's new drilled out to use as a closure on a paracord bracelet.
My measurement-
When I start loading these, I'll probably shorten them to 3.355 or 3.360" or so.

The reloading gods are smiling upon me this week. Went to the local Cabelas tonight, found a whole aisle full of powder!!!! Brought home some 7828, 4064, and 4350. Now to decide whether to use 7828 or 4350. Which would give better load density?

Ramshot Magnum and Rl22 are both awesome powders in the 7Rem Mag. Magnum is pretty easy to find right now.

I'm not sure if there are any local retailers that carry Ramshot powders. Magnum has interested me. RL22 has also caught my attention. But The fellow who previously loaded for my rifle as well as my uncle have always used Hodgdon/IMR, and I just continued that habit. If 7828 and 4350 don't work I'll pick up some RL22. But, I'm confident I'll find a load.
