making dummy training rounds

I teach a concealed carry course here in N.C, and I use dummy rounds for my students to handle load and unload the guns in class. My problem is after some use my bullets keep sinking further in to the case, and in the case of my .45 they do not cycle correct. Any ideas on how to keep my bullets in the correct postion in my dummy rounds?

Are the dummy rounds crimped into place?

Put some locktite inside the case with a q-tip before pressing the bullet in it.(27240 threadlocker). Don't get any on the bullet, it will end up inside your dies, (very bad). It will only take a few minutes for it to set.

That should take care of your problem.

Epoxy inside the case neck works for me. Just a thin schmear is plenty, any excess will be pushed back inside the brass by seating the bullet. Stand tip down overnight to have a strong internal ridge at the base of the bullet.

this could also be a use for the .45 ACP Lee Factory Crimp die.

That's what I use on my Dummy loads. (and hot loads too.) I haven;t had any problems. I just make sure to somehow mark the case so there is no confusion between dummy and live rounds.

Fill the case with sand to the level that the bullet just rest on it. That takes care of most of your bullet setback problem. Also, I've found that if you use cast instead of jacketed they seem to hold the crimp longer.

How about a wooden dowel in the case?

I wish I could. Unfortunately I drill a hole in the sides of my action proving rounds to mark them as non-live, so anything granular wil be a no-no. Great idea though!

Are you needing a sack full of the dummy rounds?

If the number is low, you might look at the high price, store bought dummy rounds like A-Zoom snap caps.

I like the wood dowel idea myself. Should work well.

I never thought of the dowel, that would work pretty well. I blacken the bullets with a sharpie for mine to mark them as dead.
