Garand slam fires: follow up

Well, I managed to over sleep (like 4 hr, darn night shift!!!) on the first nice morning of turkey season that I had off, and after pitching a fit, I decided to take the doubling LMR Garand that I had posted about, to the range, after implementing step 1 in the fix it plan.

I had swapped the GI op rod spring for a H.D one, believing I was reducing wear and tear on the rifle. Ba..Ba..Ba..BAM, ping.....!

OK, so reinstall GI spring, shoot it. Rifle ran fine. Same ammo, same trigger group, etc. So, conclusion, the Wolf HD spring was the culprit.

I have not worked up the nerve to clip the HD spring and try it again. (I already had clipped it about an inch, it still doubled).

Be wary of heavy op rod springs. What one needs is an adjustable gas plug.

What people fail to understand about the M1 is that the "recoil spring' is more than just that.

The spring powers the entire action. The rifle is designed and carefully "balanced" to operate properly with the specific USGI strength spring, and when you start installing heavier or lighter springs, it usually causes problems.

You can play spring games with other guns but not the M1.
If you need a new M1 spring, or just wonder if it's still good after all these years, just buy a new USGI strength spring from Fulton Armory or Orion 7.
They both sell an modern high-grade, USGI specification spring.

Cutting an M1 spring is DEFINITELY not recommended.

I assume that the goal was to allow the use of commercial, modern load 30-06 with the rifle?
