Yes, I believe that to be the "case" (no pun intended). Or at least, that's the "logic" behind it to my understanding. Whether or not an FTX round would exceed max OAL with a standard length case (1.285"-ish), I don't know.

When case tension is not enough to keep the bullet secured I roll crimp to the middle of the cannelure. I have noticed that case lengths can vary up to .010", and trying to apply a consistent crimp is frustrating. I trim all my .357 mag brass to 1.279" once and I am happier for it. Take some calipers along when working up a load measure the last live round in the cylinder and see if the COL has changed.
