While watching The Thin Red Line, I noticed that a G.I. was using a pump action shotgun which sparked my curiosity. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew the name/model of G.I. issued shotguns during WWII. Links to pics would be great. Thanks in advance.

Elmer Keith mentions checking a variety of shotguns as an ordnance employee during WWII and sending them to Europe.Stevens, and Winchester pumps seemed to be common ones, and Browning A-5s and the Remington 11, their clone. Most were used for guard duty, prisoner escorts, etc, rather than used in line units.

The Pacific theater saw more use of shotguns in the jungle, for obvious reasons.

The battered short bbled Model 97 Winchester pump that was part of our crew equipment during the late unpleasantness in SEA, 1970, possibly had not been back to the states since Guadacanal. It looked it, but worked fine....

A wide array of shotguns were used for aerial gunners training and gaurd duty during WW II as dave mentioned. The most common shotguns found in combat though were the Winchester Model 12 and the Winchester Model 97 with 20" barrel and the heat shield/bayonet lug attached.

I recently had a Remington 10A with Ordinance stamps on it and a 20" barrel. A factory gaurd gun? A cutdown by troop sin the field? A post war cutdown? Hard to say but I'd bet on the first or the last scenario if I had to guess. Although the condition was poor enough that it could have seen combat
