While personal preference and availability play a big part I personally like the Enhanced Elite models. They come with the short reset trigger system, night sights and the new E2 grip.

I'm not a big fan of beavertails on SIGs. I like the MK25, because it's what the Seals use! No but seriously I think it's sort of neat. Probably could save hundreds by buying a used one though.

That said, I'd be happy with most of the 226 models as long as they had the SRT. Night sights and E2 grips are a plus, but those are easier to install afterwards than the SRT.

You can't go wrong with any P226, it's a well tested quality pistol. Does anyone remember when Sig made one version (more or less) of the high quality/well made handguns they offered? Those who wanted aftermarket features would simply purchase them as needed.

I've owned the P228, 239, 229 and 226 and the P226 is my favorite. I prefer the traditional blacked out stock P226 but lately I've come to really like the beavertail version. Not by much but it's growing on me. I find the beavertail easier to draw and get a consistent grip from the holster.

The Scorpion !! I think it has the best of what they have to offer. I liked it so much, that I bought another one in the 220 model. I still own other variations, but love the Scorpions.

Base model Nitron with Siglite night sights.
Anything else gives Sig a chance to screw something up. |

Do you have a budget number? That will drive recommendations.

I ended up getting a scorpion (p229 but same thing just a little smaller). I originally wanted the extreme, both have the same features just a different color scheme but it only came in 9mm and I had to have a .357 Sig so I was forced to get the scorpion in 40 S&W and a .357 Sig barrel. I don't really care for the beaver tail but its growing on me and hasn't caused any issues, if you were going to carry concealed though it might.

I owned a P226 for years, and loved it. When the Enhanced Elite version came out, it quickly became my favorite semi. Great handgun.......

If I was looking for a new P226 I would get the MK25. I really like it but I already own a couple P226s.
The only issue with buying a P226 is very likely you will want to buy more SIG pistols. Now that the firearm market it getting more back to normal I am seeing more CPO - Certified Pre Owned SIG pistols including P226s often for unfer $600. These are tremendous deals. Here is my CPO P226 that I bought for $500 a couple years ago. I changed out the grips to the SIG factory aluminum grips and use the Mecgar 18 round magazines. I just LOVE this P226 and the P226 and P228 are my top favorite 9MM pistols. I prefer the "plain Jane" variety myself. Good luck! |

The P226 Elite Dark has every option and is top of the line. The aluminum grips are outstanding.
Here is one of my P229 Elite Dark for reference.

The one I like - the tac ops, with that big ol' beaver tail and flared mag well and 20 rounders
The one I own - a W. German, made in mid '80's, modern-style factory grips, paid $465 not including tax / transfer "Any problems with them?" seems that some have feeding issues with certain magazines.. Use MecGar magazines in the 226. Oh, and by the way, use MecGar magazines in the 226. Not sure what magazines to use? MecGar.

While I am a P229 man, if I were going for a P226 it would be the Mk25.

226's are very good guns....well built ...and solid...
I prefer the all stainless versions...but there really isn't a bad gun within the 226 line of guns, just depends on what you want... |

uses, formats....
The SIG P series has several models.
What would you plan to use the P 226 for the most? Defense? Duty or carry? Target or match use? For regular defense or duty uses, I'd highly suggest the P226R with DAK & 3 dot night sights. It's safe & you avoid bogus claims of misuse or cocking a hammer. For target or match use, the SAO format P226 can do well. It has a frame mounted ambi safety. I'm not fond of the newer E2 grip design but many shooters & working cops use the P226. |

I would look for the oldest one you can find and spend the money you save on a good holster and some ammo.

I think the best value in a Sig today is the P6 variant, a West German police issue. It is a single stack but available for around 350 bucks and it eats anything and puts good groups down range. It looks just like the P226 for about half the price,
