Lemes was somehow able to convince a jury in a second trial that the evidence did not show beyond a reasonable doubt that he murdered the student. What he said was calculated to accomplish that result. Anything said to the contrary would have resulted in his conviction and in judgements against him in civil court

To most observers, however, the facts show that Lemes would have his life had he simply not chased the invader. He certainly would be better off financially. And he would not still face the risk of civil action.

Lemes dodged a bullet, to the surprise of many--but he has been left with nothing.
