Belted Magnum Resizing Problems

i have nosler custom brass that is once fired through my custom 300 win mag. when i try to resize it through my full length sizing die it has alot of resistance and it shaves or rolls up a ring of brass at the web. could it be a serious problem or just an idiot trying to do it?

If you are firing with a bolt action and the brass comes out of the chamber, it will go back in to the chamber. That is, unless it is messed up during the hand loading process. Try backing your full-length sizing die so that it only sizes the neck of the case (you do not need to full-length size, and it is not necessarily desirable to do so).

What load are you shooting that results in the 0.010" web expansion you saw?

It may be time for a chamber cast to see what dimensions the case walls are having to dealing with.

Can you post close-up picture of the "...shave[d] or roll[ed] up...ring of brass at the web..." ? (See "Attach files" below, and/or upload the pics to tinypic.com and post the web address that TinyPic gives you.)

A measurement greater than .5135 ahead of the belt would mean excessive pressure. Also, belted magnums headspace on the belt. Try setting your resizing die with a nickel between shell holder and die to avoid shoulder set back. Enclose some pictures of fired cases that show primers and a case that you described with the rolled back brass.

Been there, done that. Buy a bottle of some Dillon spray on case lube. Spray on liberally and let dry for about 10 minutes. I wipe the shoulder off before running the brass through the die to prevent a possible shoulder dent, never happened with this stuff but I wipe the shoulder off anyway. Also Lee dry case lube works well but it leaves a film on the case.

If your case is showing excessive expansion just above the belt your probably getting some excessive pressures. Just few thigns you can do to find the problem or solve it. Check your powder charge to be sure you are in an acceptable margin, make sure the brass is within trim to spec., change powders to a slower burning powder and load in the mid range data for it, absolutely make sure your COAL is within minimum / maximum spec.. What do your primers look like after firing? If they are extremely cratered you are likely experiencing some really high pressures. Backig off your dies can work but I would think about buying a neck die if nothing else works for you.
