Need help deciding on next handgun!

I never thought I’d be writing something like this but I’m stuck. I currently have 2 Walther PPQ M1’s (9mm), a CZ75BD (9mm),* and my wife’s LC9 (9mm) and LCP (.380) as the pistols in my house. I EDC one of the PPQ’s in a Theis IWB holster (which feels a tad heavy from time to time, but is usually ok) and the CZ is the current nightstand gun. I’m in the market for a new pistol ($1000 limit) mainly because I’d like another option possibly for CCW or HD or both but can’t seem land on one.
*Do I NEED a .45? (1911, HK USP, Sig 220, G21 or something like that..)
*Should I get the quintessential G19 and keep the ammo variety to a minimum?
*Perhaps a HK P30 would be a good carry pistol..
*Should I just improve the PPQ’s? (recoil reducers, more holster options, etc…)
Is there something I’m missing and haven’t thought of yet??
My head is spinning and I’d just like an outside perspective.

Sounds like you're short on revolvers. U should look at some 357/9mm convertibles. I don't own one myself but I like the concept

I'm of the opinion if I don't have the caliber I want it. I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea. I'd agree with the guy above. Sounds like an opportunity for a 686 or a gp100.

That's my vote. Same ammo, which isn't a bad idea these days. I'm a huge Glock 19 fan too. You'll get one? Then you'll get why.

Lot's of parts are easy to find and cheap too.

Sweet shooting, accurate, easy gun to learn and use it to teach novice shooters.
Smith model 10's are out there and a good buy for a high quality handgun.
My favorite is the model 15 combat masterpiece. Beautiful, accurate and superbly balanced.

I found myself in a similar position. Bought the G19, don't regret it a bit. G26 followed, now I'm eyeing a .357 revolver, or a 686 as someone else mentioned. The 19 was my first glock, now I'm a believer.

IMHO:

You have the PPQs and the CZ-75BD (which is one of my CC guns, and conceals rather nicely on me). This was largely how my gun collection started. My next purchase, were I you, would be a good revolver, as others have suggested. I would strongly reccomend a .357 Mag revolver, as this will be a largely HD gun. I own a S&W Model 19, have owned a Ruger Security Six (sold it, kicked myself, and am getting another one) and a Rossi 972. I would steer towards a Ruger, Smith, or Colt at your price range, and you should be just fine.

Once you own your first wheelgun, you'll find that you will always have one around...

Another vote for .357 Mag. revolver here. You introduce two new calibers with one gun (.38 spc/ .357 mag) and you don't have a revolver... seams like a good way to go.

For HD, maybe a 4" Ruger Gp100 or S&W 686 or something similarly sized.

For carry, maybe a S&W j-frame or 2.25" Ruger Sp101.

(3" SP101 might be a good compromise for a dual purpose CCW/HD weapon)

I'm the same way. You never know what caliber will or will not be in stock, especially nowadays. I own more .45's than any other caliber and its nice to have the ammo compatibility but variety is also nice.

You really can't go wrong with any of the options you listed. I would advise you to first decide on what caliber you would like. Figure out if you'd rather have that ammo compatibility or if you'd like some variety, then go from there.

If you go with the variety option I would recommend a .45 since its on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to what you already own. Out of the pistols you listed in your post I can personally vouch for the HK USP .45 (wearing it in a thigh holster at work as I am typing this). It is truly a great firearm but I would not recommend it for a CCW.

Have you considered the G30 instead of the G21? I use it as both a CCW in a IWB holster and as my nightstand gun. Glock now makes what they call the G30S which has the same capacity as the G30 but with the G36-sized slide which will make for much easier and more comfortable CCW. Perhaps that is something to look into.

Anyway, like I said, decide the caliber then go hold some guns.

I think you need to add a 45 ACP to your inventory. Check out the Smith & Wesson M&P in 45 cal or the Springfield XDM in 45. Very nice handguns and way under a grand. Either one can be CCW'd or will make a good HD weapon. The M&P compact is even smaller. Or for a smaller Springfield, the XDS. Now, I don't own any of these, but one of them is gonna be my next new hand gun. I already have 9mm and 10mm autos, and a 45 Colt revolver, but it's always fun to add a new caliber.

You mentioned your desire to have this next gun for increased HD or CCW options.

For CCW, I like small easy to carry guns. I could see a Kahr P9 or P40 being easier to carry without giving anything up. If you went wheel gun, a S&W 13 3" or S&W 640-1 would both give you 357 power in a small handy package...640 being smaller by quite a bit.

For HD, your PPQ looks like a good choice. A rail light would be a good option. ... Or to get a new gun, a Glock 17 with a light and plus two floor plates gives you lots of weapon for HD when you will likely have only enough time to get something in hand and go. A mag and searchlight in the left hand and G17 with a weaponlight is a lot of horsepower without requiring "suiting up".

Last, a second caliber might be nice for when the LGS is out of your caliber as we have seen lately.

You already have a good assortment of solid semiautos in a good caliber (9mm), so maybe now what you should look for is a "fun" handgun. Something you've been curious about but haven't had the opportunity to try out.

Others have suggested k-frame S&W revolvers and that would be a good way to go. They are so well balanced and easy to shoot accurately. Very fine handguns. Love mine.

I'll add that a Colt 1911 might tickle your fancy, too. If you haven't had any trigger time with a 1911 in 45acp, prepare yourself for some fun shooting. There are lots of reasons these old warhorses are still so popular more than 100 years later. A lot of it has to do with how nicely they handle, also. There's some nostalgia among us oldtimers, but I've seen plenty of youngsters wowed by 1911s, too. It would be a nice contrast to the guns you currently have on hand.

hi just got a h&k p2000sk. i got the 9mm s/d action with decocker but they have different. you may like bigger cal. thought i did to but the 9 is fun. the gun feels good which is very important. traded mine for a s&w 340pd. the bullets weighed more than the gun. got the h&k new for well under the grand. any gun is good if you like it and it feels good. good luck

There are many options available with your budget (you can almost get 2 firearms).
1. Revolver - Ruger SP101, J Frame S&W 60 or 640, or K frame S&W 67 or 15.
2. Another Semi - Glock 19, 1911(pick the caliber you like).
If you like a .45, good but it is not needed.

For CC, I like simple and small -- I mostly CC a Kahr K9. Sometimes, I carry a Walther P99. My CC pistol is usually my HD firearm --- to keep things simple.

When I get around to it, I will get a simpler handgun to replace the Walther P99; Maybe a Ruger SP101, S&W 640, or G19.

Here's another vote for the Springfield XDS 45. I conceal this weapon and it is quite fine. It shoots straight, the recoil is manageable, it's not TOO heavy, it's thin and fairly comfortable to wear IWB with cargo shorts. It's very nice.

I'm considering the Kahr CM9 but I haven't fired one yet.

No revolvers , nothing in ,22lr , nothing suitable for handgun hunting ( aka powerful field gun ) .

Everybody needs a .22lr. Good for honing your skills , for starting new shooters , outdoor plinking , and just plain fun.

Shop around for a good .357 revolver , and you should be able to get that and a .22lr for your target $ range. Or get a 1911 or a bigbore revolver.

I vote for a revolver as well. A good .357 is always a smart addition to any collection.

Get a 1911. No American gun collection is complete without a couple of these time tested gold standard in combat handguns. Hell with a little perseverance you could probably score two nearly new 1911s one full size and one commander size for CC.
Look at Rock Island Armory pistols. Cut out of 4140 arsenal grade steel on CNC machines. One no longer need spend $1000 on the gun and another K at the gunsmiths. All my RIA pistols are well made, reliable, and more accurate than I can make use of. Or drop $650 on a top of the line RIA match model and give your wife a C note and tell her to go to the spa or something.

If not a 1911 I'd vote for the GP100 and a good SAA replica.
