Mossberg 590 Military Any Good?

Local gun shop has Mossberg 590's on sale $279.99 9 shot synthetic stock will take 2 3/4 & 3" shells. Barell heat shroud also. I have no experience with this gun. Good? Bad? Any body know? I have heard that it is the same version that the US military is issued (don't know for fact just what I heard) any information would be greatly appreciated. BTW is that a good price? Thanks

The MOssberg, for the money is a good gun. I have one issue on this piece, and that is the safety is made of plastic. There are after market metal safties that will replace the plastic.

A couple of Authors, this forum, had experienced difficullties with pump action operation. Sticking not going smoothly, however, from what I understand they resolved these problems.

Presonnally I prefer the Rem 870, doesn't have the bells and whistles, shrouds etc, but it does have a follower that is hard to jam. When the Mossberg jams, with a round half out of the mag. tube, it is a bugger to free-up.

AR Man , I just picked up the same shotgun about 2 weeks ago . I have always used Remington but I have an 870 Police that has been at the factory since I bought it 2 months ago and they have no idea when I will get it back . So to show my displeasure I picked up the 590 just to have an extra shotgun , I like it better than the Remington , it pumps smoother , patterns better and kicks less . I paid $299 for mine so I think you found a good price . The military version [590A1] does not have the heat shield , has a thicker barrel , metal trigger guard assembly and metal safety button , it also runs an extra $100 . I have a friend that is a training officer for a local PD , they just bought 6 of the 590A1's and after shooting them they said they would never use Remington again [they have used 870's for years] . Before I get yelled at I do have an 870 Marine Magnum that I love , and I have Remington hunting shotguns , but they are not the company they used to be . One thing I did put on my 590 was the metal safety button from Brownells , I doubt the plastic one would give you any trouble , the one on my 835 turkey gun has worked fine but I was ordering parts and thought I would try one . I've owned a 590 for about three years now. I've never had the first hint of a problem. It's made me a believer in Mossberg.

One factor that's influenced my shotgun buying recently is that Mossberg has its own service department. Remington, unbelievebly, got rid of theirs, so anything going back to Remington is farmed out to a "warranty station." (If the service situation at Remington has improved, someone please let me know!)

I just purchased my Mossberg 590A1. It has a metal trigger guard and safety. Yes you can get a heat shield for the 590A1. Just go to Mossberg customer sight and order one, they cost less than $50. I am now getting rid of the synthetic stock and forearm and putting on wood, I hate the feel of the synthetic.

Sounds like the OP's talking about a 590SP. A used A1 still runs about $350, on a good day. I've had a 590 and it was great. Sold it for a 590A1, which I'm a lot happier with (speedfeed stock, ghost rings, 18.5" over 20", so less front heavy). Solid gun. It makes me hesitate on any other pump gun.
