What do you guys do with your Garand?

Do you actually do anything other than plink/target shoot?

I've been wanting a CMP Garand but the more I think about it, the less likely I'll do anything with it other than keep it in the safe.

I'm ordering another to have it built into a match grade rifle.

It's fun for plinking stuff too, but I think an M4gery is a better plinker with cheaper ammo and more tinkering options.

I use mine to have fun at the range, shoot steel targets at 200 meters for fun. I do plan to do some hunting with it once I load up some hunting rounds for it. Its a blast to shoot and it gets a lot of attention at my range anyway especially the ping. People are always asking me questions. I say get it! you won't regret it. I also plan to shoot with it in 3 gun competition in a few weeks, I should have fun probably won't win but i bet I will beat some of the AR guys and that will make me smile

I got my first Leg point towards my Distinguished Badge with a Garand. The John C. Garand matches are a lot of fun as well as good marksmanship training.

There are a lot of answers to your question.
Originally I purchased one because of the history and the fact my father carried one. But later it became a wonderful gun to shoot. Personally if you don’t have a Grand in your collection, your collection is not complete. And how much longer will they be available in the quality and quantity that the CMP has?
8 rounds down range 300 yards and hold 8 inch groups (Good for me) and that end block metallic ping at the end, just brings smiles to my face.

I've had mine a long time. Got it in the early '80s from then DCM.

I've shot it in some high power matches, including 1000 yard matches. I've taught Sniper Schools for the military using the M1C/Ds and used mine quite a bit in those schools.

Not I use it when I put on CMP GSM Clinics and Matches.

Got a lot of rounds through mine, still shoots.

I don't really have guns for a particular purpose. There are some I just want to have so I can take them to the range. I don't want a collection, more like an armory.

It's far from the perfect gun for the job, but it brings a smile to my face, and you can't beat that.

I hunt my Garand, and plan it so that I carry it on AM hunts where the light is getting better........not worse as in PM hunts.

Once again, this year, I am declaring the "year of the iron sights". I will kill a deer w/ an iron sighted rifle. (same declaration last year, no opportunity)

Replaced the hardball bullet with a 150 gr Core-Lokt hunting bullet, that's it. If I can't see the target clear enough to shoot I don't shoot, that simple. Shoots to the same point of aim at 200 yards as my hardball ammo and that's close enough for me, I won't shoot iron sights at game animals past 150 yards anymore because of my old peepers.

My brother in-law cut the top half of the peep sight off, more for keeping water drops out of the hole. I would think taking a conical dremel cutter or sanding stone and enlarging the hole(ghost site style) might work. Garand peeps are still abundant I believe. All I have done is installed a Shuster Adjustable Gas plug so I can shoot 180 gr. Partitions with no worries, on mine.

A co-worker has a scout type upper rear hand gaurd with a picatiny rail. A scout scope or red dot would work well.

It was my dads. He brought it home from the Pacific. It sits in a glass case in the gun room with his medals and some of his pics. I take it out occasionally and fire it and then clean it.

My Dad and 6 Uncles depended on one of those things to get them home. They all came back physically whole and they're all gone now, but whenever I handle my DCM Garand, I think of them. Later on, it'll beat a shoebox of faded black/white photos that my Kiddos/Grand-Kids will never recognise.

Does any firearm need to have a practical purpose for it to be worthwhile?
I shoot my Garand, and I cherish it. I have guns that are more modern, practical and expensive, but this is still the gun that really MATTERS to me.

well it's a rifle-- Those are made for shooting! Hi-power, 3 gun if you want to race for last, and one the more fun ways to launch a 150 grain bullet

I passed on an opportunity to buy one from the CMP for $160.00 because I consider them useless for civilian use. I really do not like the Garand. Wall hangers, IMHO.

Thanks for the reminder. My M1 match rifle has been sitting in the safe for many years. Got to take it out, clean and oil it then put it back.

Oh, and I shoot it too. Garands are incredibly fun rifles to shoot.

Don't hesitate. Get a CMP Garand now. A CMP Service Grade rifle is probably the best $625 you can spend on any firearm, period. Here's my Service Grade Springfield Armory with a 1944 receiver and a like-new 1954 barrel.
