45ACP Pin Load

Any suggestions for a good pin load in 45ACP? I'm just starting in this sport and I tried 200gr SWC at 900 fps last time but I'm thinking of heavier load to make sure pins do down with decent shots or lighter to get faster recovery time. Which way should I go?

When I shot BPins most of the guys were using good old 230g FMJ Mill-Spec loads

A 230 lead bullet at 900 fps works well. An added advantage is to use flat profile or semi wadcutter bullets. These tend to "bite " the pin a little better with less deflection than a standard round nosed bullet.In my experience, military hardball tends to richochet off the pins ,sometimes turning them or wobbling them with out knocking them off of the table.Remember to aim for the upperhalf of the pin. I've seen too many solid hits on the base fail to knock them down.

Some folks use the 250g RN-FP normally loaded for 45 Colt.

The general rule is you want a power factor of about 190 to 200. Multiply the bullet weight by the speed, then divide by 1000. If you shoot a 200 grain bullet at 1000 fps, you have a power factor of 200. Go much lower in power factor and you don't reliably knock the pins clear of the table. Go much fhigher in power factor and the recoil slows you down to much. A flat nose or hollowpoint bullet may be better than a round nose bullet if you don't hit the pin in its center. The flat nose and hollow point bullets are more likely to grab the pin and send it spinning of the table with off center shots than a round nose bullet.

at what distance's are Pins shot? any events around the nashville tn area. always thought that it looked like fun

The usual distance for pin shooting is 25 feet.

You need a load around 205-210 powerfactor to reliably take off the pins when you are going for broke at a match. lower powerfactor loads will take off pins, but when you are at a match the time counts, and you want a load that will take off the pins even with an edge hit. My favorite bullet is the R&R Pinbuster 235SWC lead bullet behind 5.0 WSL. It is soft shooting and works everytime. W231 works ok also, you want a 230 type bullet around 900 fps, 200-215 gr bullet between 1000-1040 fps, you get the idea. Hornady made a 200 and 230 grain flat point for a while.. load that up on 5.5 grains of red dot and you should be good to go.

good old hardball does well too.
