Alliant 20/28 for Pistols?
Has anyone worked up data for 9, 40, or 45 using 20/28? I have 8 pounds that I bought for Skeet reloading but don't shoot much Skeet anymore. Since it has a burn rate similar to Unique, I thought it might work.
Thanks much |

Just started some testing with it. My testing will be with revolver cartridges. Here is the thread I started rather than repeating what I have written: 20/28 test data

Thanks much RClark. I looked at your link and that looks like a good start for sure. I shoot a lot of .44 also so it should work well there with cast bullets.

Bugs,
Go to the Alliant website and send Alliant's customer service an email request for data. I had some questions about PowerPistol and got answers from Alliant's customer service rep the same day I sent my questions. |

Your welcome. About to load up some .357 loads for some tests. Then onto .44Spec and .44Mag and maybe the .45ACP (in revolver). All I shoot is cast bullets .

Thanks much guys. A year or so ago I wrote Alliant and was told that they have no plans to develop pistol data for 20/28 so I dropped it until now. If you would, RClark, post your work-up for the .44. I shoot a lot of cast MBC 18BRN bullets and it should work well. I'll get going myself with testing when I find some more time. I need 30 hours in every day as it is!
Take care, Bugs |

From your Ruger Forum post, it sounds a lot like Universal Clays.

they know more than me?
I have learned that powder manufacturers often have good reason they do not offer data for certain powders in certain applications.
When NO data is present, it indicates one must contact the manufacturer direct, and investigate why THEY do not offer data for your intended application. They may have good reason......

More than likely they just haven't got around to it or don't plan too .
BTW, I have not been the only one to experiment with it. For example over on cast boolits some data on .44Mag and .357 out of a rifle : http://castboolits.gunloads.com/arch...p/t-97667.html Or some data for the .44 Special.... http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB3/vie...?f=11&t=182527 Still I'll do my own testing.... The sky is not falling .

Most fast-burning shotgun powders also do very well in handguns - 700X, Red Dot, Green Dot, Universal, Unique, Clays, International Clays, etc., etc......
As I am running low on Universal, and it won't be available again until next year, I am looking at 20/28 for both my 20 gauge reloads and my 32SWL, 38, 357, 9mm, and 45 Right now, Green Dot might work for some |

I have a theory as to why powder mfgs don't publish handgun loads for certain powders. They think they would sell less powder. There is no other reason that makes since. International Clays would load my shotguns, 12 and 20 and all my pistols. I would need only one powder. I would still burn approx. the same amount of powder but I'd only have one kind on hand.

That would make their job easier - they wouldn't need to run some many products; changeover is expensive.
