5.56x45 deprime?

what tool are needed to deprime 5.56x45?

I use a Lee Universal decapper, but most FL sizing dies have a decapper pin too. If you want to decap before tumbling and sizing, then the Lee Decapper is the way to go.

Hello Tom,

I would recommend you get a reloading manual such as the Lee, Hornady or Lyman. Read up on the processes and tools needed to reload.

But to answer your question, you need a decapping/sizing die, or there is a die that decaps only.

i have broken several rcbs decapping dies. The lee decapping does not do the job either. Thank you for your response.

Tom: Check the primer crimp on your brass. Most Lake City brass (non-match) has a circular crimp and punches out easily. Some mipsurp foreign brass has staked primers and the job is infinitely more difficult - may have to be drilled out the first time.

You can even run across some Berdan-primed foreign ammo, so take a quick look down the neck to make sure you've got Boxer-primed cases. If the primers are crimped in, you're going to want a tool like the Dillon primer-pocket swager to get rid of the crimp.

-Type of brass (headstamp, is it range pick up or did you purchase factory ammo)
-Type of press

I use an RCBS Universal Depriming Die, probably deprimed 6,000 rounds with that tool and haven't broken a depriming punch yet. That's all military brass too.

Thousands of rounds of 5.56 with Lee decap and re-size with no problems.

Are the cartridge cases you working on Boxer primed?
Look down in side and note if there is one flash hole or two holes. You need a different tool to deprime the berdan (two hole) brass.

I see.

Sounds like you need to switch brass then. I did break one decapping pin on my 223 die, and it was an oddball case marked '5.56' and the flash hole was just a hair smaller than the pin, so it got stuck somehow and snapped it off. I now throw those out and stick with other cases I'm familiar with.

Lee will send you out a new pin at no cost if you give them a call.
