I really need to....

....stay off this site. All this talk about BP rifles has created a yearnin'. Due to being of the southpaw persuasion the options are diminished some, at least to keep things in the ball park for me, financially.

What I want is a 54 cal., caplock, slow twist (1 in 60 or so for RB's) 28-32 in. bbl.

Possible Shop has the (1) Lyman GP Hunter in 54 cal but 1 in 32 twist. (2) The Great Plains with 1 in 60 twist, but a flinter and is 50 cal. (3) The Deerstalker in 50 cal, 1 in 48 twist (could live with that), but not the 24 inch barrel. All in left hand.

What I want doesn't exist (in my price range). Compromise time. What to do, what to do? Leanining toward #2 (the flinter) Probably won't ever go after elk again. !80 gr. ball ok for deer. Want a caplock, but flintlock sure is beckoning.

Anyone here ever used a Lyman flintlock? Wondering about frizzen hardness, etc. Lookin' for input. Want to keep the gun price around $500.00. Thanks.

Hawg - I have a 50 cal. Southpaw Lyman Great Plains in flintlock. The frizzen fine. The flint isn't. I fired over 100 shots with the same flint and still haven't changed it or sharpened it.

That's cool but he said he wanted a .54 caplock.

what you want and what you get

Most flintlocks can be swapped out for a percussion.
Contact the manufacturer for a drum nipple combo and a side percussion lock.
Also Try Dixie Gun Works Track of the wolf possibles shop etc. for options and parts.

DGW has a Lyman .50 cal LH on sale for $540
Also a competent gun smith could drill and tap a barrel for left hand,
You'd have to modify the stock
