Possible solution

Bill -

Since you are communicating with the forum, it appears you have access to another computer.

There may be a way to recover your data, depending on how handy you are with the innards of computers. There is a product called Spin Rite, produced by Gibson Research Company (www.grc.com). Cost is $89. As I understand it, this product is designed to recover otherwise unreadable data from "dead or dying" drives.

You should be able to pull the old hard drive and with another computer turned off, open the computer and install the old drive as a secondary drive. Boot up the computer, log on to the Internet and purchase Spin Rite to recover the data. You can read a bit more at http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm.

Might be a whole lot easier than recreating (or trying to, anyway) everything on the old drive, and might even bring it back to life long enough to back everything off. According to the testimonials at the above site, the drive may stay running long after you fix it.

I've known about GRC for several years, and have used quite a few of his free programs to cleanup and safeguard my computers. Steve writes good code. I know I'd probably follow the advice I'm offering you if I were in your shoes.

Good luck.

Temporary Fix

Bill
Sorry to hear about your Computer problem. My hard drive crashed last weekend. I had backed up the data a month earlier but I was still going to lose a months worth of data. I found a temporary solution on the net that allowed me to get all my data off my old drive.
First, get a new drive and prepare it (format it and put an operating system on it). Then put your old drive in a zip lock bag and put it in your freezer overnight (I'm not kidding). After 10 -12 hours in the freezer, your old drive will have tightened up enough to allow you to use it for 30 - 60 minutes. This should be long enough for you to transfer the data to the new drive. It worked for me! Good luck and let us know what happened.
