mauser 98 question with pics

so i got this mauser 98 given to me. the barrel is a pitted mess, but the action seems to work smooth. the trigger is a piece of crap. i am looking for a 7mm mag for a toy. i don't care about it being a pretty gun, just one to shoot. i would prefer to use this stock if possible. what's a ballpark price to turn this gun into a 7mm mag? and is it worth it compared to buying something else?

$450-$500, minimum - IF the action's long enough to handle the 7mm Mag (It doesn't appear to be)

A new barrel @ $225 minimum, unless a take-off can be located cheaper.
Enlarging bolt face for the belted case @ $50,
Fitting/chambering above barrel @ $150 +/_
Alterations to action/magazine to feed belted magnum cases @ $75-$100

Not really (to me), but what price do you put on your pleasure/enjoyment ?

For the cost of conversion you could buy a factory rifle. Sell the beast to someone who needs a project.

Ballpark value for a sporterized 98 with a bad barrel probably $150 max. Look at ER Shaws website for prices on reasonable rebarrels. But even that route will not produce something more valuable than $350 - 400, and you can buy a new Howa/Vanguard for that. If you rebarrel than only for a caliber that is not commonly available for cheap as a new gun.

The action is long enough for the 7 Rem Mag.

Don't know about the price. SGNs has mauser actions you can get for $60-80 bucks, Boyds has some good reasonable stocks (Wood), as does MidwayUSA (plastic).

A barrel is gonna run you about $200. Plus another 200-250 to get it chambered and fitted to the action and open up the bolt face. Then you have to get it blued.

So its gonna cost you about $600 min. to put a gun together. You could shave that a bit if you do your own work, but then you still have to get a reamer and headspace gages.

So you can save a few bucks by buying new, or a good used rifle.

Personally I would rather build my own but I have the equipment to do it. Anyone can buy a rifle, not everyone can build one.....................Oh they can, but wont.

The problem with building your own, as you can see above, you are gonna pay $600 + (and it will probably be a big +), but when you're through, you will have a rifle you may be able to sell for maybe $350.

Thats why you dont find many rich gunsmiths out there.

The value of a home made gun isnt in the money you put into it.

A rebarrel to 7x57MM would be a heck of a lot cheaper and would not need to do anything else to magazine, or bolt face, or to stock.

About $83 bucks for a short chambered barrel. Yes, the brass is readily from the same source. Your would need a gunsmith to remove the barrel from the action, install the new barrel, finish ream the chamber and head space. This is the least expensive way to go (no other alterations to the existing action), and you end up with a 7mm that performs well and is pleasant to shoot.
