AP70N looks as if it's going to be a pretty good choice for what you want.

38Spl load
I have a 2" snubbie, so I stay away from slow powders. I see no point in powder burning after the bullet is gone. At present I am using IMR 700x.
I shoot a different bullet weight, so your loads will differ from mine. http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp http://www.reloadbench.com/burn.html Last edited by DannyB1954; December 18, 2013 at 11:14 PM. |

AP70N is about the best powder you could hope for -- it is the same as Hodgdon's Universal. (I think Unique is a better powder, but that would be too much to ask) It will work very well in .38 Special, and is usable in .357 Magnum.
Do not load those HBWC's too hot, even in the .38 Specials; accuracy will be terrible if you do. Keep on the lookout for some 158 grain cast bullets, (RNFP or SWC or round nosed, the profile doesn't matter much) you can go wild with those in your .357.

Cheers people, many thanks for all of the replies.
The only other powder I was offered was AR2205 which is a rifle powder and the data says 14.5gr as a starting point (as opposed to 3.5gr starting for AP70N) for a .357Mag pistol load.... not sure 14.5gr would fit in the shell-case and leave space for the bullet Maxed out at 16gr... but the velocities are rather fast 1400 - 1500fps.... Only problem is that I could only get 1lb of AP70 and 4lb would have been a better quantity. Cheers and thanks Gaz |
