Cold weather is upon us. Do you change your carry piece and why?
Much colder now. Do you change your carry gun because of the weather change?
This poll allows you to vote for more than one option. |

In the worst possible conditions I bring a CZ-52.
1. In horrible cold weather it was made to work. 2. I don't worry about exposing it to extreme elements. 3. If I have to use it in cold weather it will raise the temperature to a balmy 50 degrees after the first shot! |

My G39 still comes along as a BUG, and my G37 now is my primary ccw. I already had a 10 round G37 backup mag, so it will work for either.

During the warmer months of the year I carry my Kahr PM9 loaded up with 124gr Speer Gold Dots. During the winter I carry my Para Companion with 230gr 45ACP FMJ. I don't doubt that the 9mm would work just fine in most situations but I figure I'd rather not take the risk. I don't have to worry about whether or not my 45ACP is going to expand and penetrate properly through winter clothing.

Other:
If I'm wearing a coat/jacket, I often drop a pocket something into the strong-side jacket pocket in addition to my IWB-carried primary (which, with coat on, is a bit more difficult to get at). Primary: LW Commander, Star BKM, SP101, I'm now trying out a Sig P239 in .40 (Oh, just one at a time, usually ). Pocket: S&W M38, Charter Undercover, Star DK Best, Will

In the summer and spring I pocket carry my LCR. In the winter, I tend to bring along my G36 or if I'm feeling ornery and can conceal it, a big ol' revolver.

Summer carry is a Glock 19. Winters in Indiana can get pretty cold, so I can conceal full sized pistols rather well under several layers. I'm getting a new 1911 for just this purpose. Plus I love the .45ACP.

Only reason for change is I get to carry my full size guns with a jacket.

As an aside, I'm actually carrying my xd tactical today for the first time as a ccw. I wouldnt've thought I could conceal that longer bbl but, well, they didn't toss me outta Sams Club just now so I s'pose I pulled it off. Cool.

I do not carry a different gun in cold weather because of what other people are wearing, but because of what I'm wearing.
In summer months, I often carry a Glock 26 in the front pocket of my cargo shorts. The pants I wear in the winter do not have such generous pockets, so I always carry in a holster. If I'm carrying in a holster, I'm going to carry a G19 or G17. |

Now that it's cold, I can get away with a few more layers so my CCW piece becomes a bit larger. My usual winter carry is a Springfield TRP 1911 but on occasion I'll down size to a S&W 637 Airweight (my summer carry) depending on what I'm doing.

1&2 for me. Heavier clothes means its easier to conceal a full size pstol in a large caliber.

No. I carry my RIA CS year round, although during the cold seasons I don't have to carry a .38 revolver with snake shot on the saddle or in the glove box.

Cold Weather Carry
The SIG 239 is my hands-down favorite in any season. If a situation calls
for a deeper level of concealment, a S&W J-frame is always an option. |

Instead of carrying my LCP, I can now carry my 9mm or 45 because of my dress.

I do the first three options actually.
Winter I carry the .45 ACP either with light grain to produce higher fps or +P load for the same reason. Pistol: 1911 Or I carry the .40 S&W because of higher FPS and the fact that I can conceal a double stack pistol easier this time of the year. Or I swap out for a different caliber for the same reason. Most days I pack the 1911 with +P though or lower grain, standard pressure or the .40 S&W.

I carry a CZ 40P year round. IWB under an oversize T-shirt in summer. IWB under a sweat shirt in winter.

I don't change a thing. During winter I only wear more clothing in the parking lot, the minute I enter the store or my car I take my coat off. So I really can't conceal any bigger gun during the winter than what I can conceal during the summer.
The only time I change which gun I carry is if I am wearing slacks or not. Slacks = Bersa .380. Jeans/shorts = XD subcompact .40 (though the new Beretta PX4 storm has caught my eye). |
