1898 krag-jorgensen

I saw a picture of a KRAG-JORGENSEN for sale, they have it listed as a 1898, the picture appears to be a carbine, (not a modified rifle). It doesn't have wood on top of the barrel, I believe its called a hand guard? Did some have a hand guard and others didn't?

All Krags, rifle and carbine, originally had handguards. That is probably a cut down ("sporterized") rifle and should be evaluated accordingly.
