The Impossible Question to answer for most...

I guess we're all prone to add qualifiers to our "favorite" (plinking, range toy, hunting, etc), and I was a bit torn between several guns.

Then I simply asked myself the basic question, "Which gun do I strap on every day, travel with, depend on for multiple roles, and entrust with my life... and the answer was my plain ole Ruger SR9c. It's always on my hip or within arm's reach, goes in my checked baggage every time I fly, stays on my night stand, and has my complete confidence.

For me it´s the Glock 19. Carry it on and off duty, a real workhorse, never had a failure and trust my life on it.

My favorite semiautos (It's a tie) are my Tanfoglio "Mossad" 9mm(like an early EAA witness), and my Beretta 92FS. I love the looks of both and they both shoot great, and were cheap on top of it.

My favorite handgun period is my Dan Wesson Model 715 .357.

Now, choosing between the Govt or Commander, that's a quandry.

Hands down favorite is my Glock 22. I have prettier looking handguns that I show my friends, but if push comes to shove, the Glock is what I will show to a BG.

The question was : favorite "pistol".....so I'll exclude revolvers.


For me, #1 would be the Beretta/ Stoeger Cougar, specifically the 8000L (F) model. Why ? Fits my hand like no other, perfect function, low recoil, very accurate, little muzzle flip, I like the looks, interesting operating system, etc.

#2 (a close 2nd) would be the Smith and Wesson 3rd gen. .....specifically the 6904/6906 series. Conventional design, but beautifully built, perfect function, dead nuts reliable, accurate, etc. etc.

As you can see, I LIKE slide-mounted decocker-style safeties - that's the way they SHOULD be, IMO. (To each his own, though.)


I've been through more than 10 handguns, in the last 2 years, trying to figure out what I truly like and what I do not. I've barely scratched the surface, admittedly, but the two mentioned above are the stand outs for me.

Favorite pistol? Man, makes a person think. If I was asked favorite revolver, that would be easy..Python. But semi-auto? Man...thoughts range from guns I own, have owned, wanted and maybe just handled. From the 1911, my dream is a Nighthawk T3, to the BHP, to my 39-2 and etc....

I love my Sar K2-45, 14+1 of .45acp in one of the most ergonomic pistols I have ever held, with good looks and excellent reliability (no failures yet and roughly 2k rnds down the tube, both factory and reloads), mixed in with the fact I carry it on duty makes it an easy pick..

but the 1911 wins. Regardless of caliber, the timeless design, the proven track record, the legacy...the 1911, to me, is the measuring stick. My CZ based Sar is a close second with my 39-2 right there.

1911... My favorite 1911 so far has been my current one, a Colt Rail Gun. I got over 300 rounds of all flavors (to include steel case) through it with zero cleaning and just a little lube before the feed ramp got so dirty it failed to fully chamber a round. Quick swipe of the finger and continued on with an otherwise flawless day at the range.

My home defense pistol has been a Browning hi-power for almost 30 years. The only change has been the addition of crimson trace grips.

It's still the the SIG P220 after all these years. It gets a run for its money with the Glock 19 and S&W Model 24.

Please don't openly/publicly discuss good things about the SR9c - leaves more of them available for us who don't have much experience with handguns.

Honestly I have the 8040, and yes it is my first handgun, but my wifes Beretta PX4, my Dad's S&W J frame .357, and my Stoeger Cougar went to bat, and I picked the Cougar 8040 any day. Less recoil than the PX4, and the .357, and I could get a tight little circle if I could shoot as good as it can.

I spent 3 days going through every sports outlet in a 60 mile radius, and between Taurus Pro/Millennium, Beretta, and everything else I could fine for -$500, Cougar was mine the instant I saw it. The feel and the looks, I didn't know it was a Beretta model until I bought it, but it just felt right. Literally, the moment I saw this I went nuts and my wife was questioning my sanity...
