Resizing 300WSM to 2233WSSM

A friend of mine has been shooting 300wsm for YEARS with factory ammo and probably has a thousand pieces of brass. Now that I am getting into reloading, he is becoming interested as well.
He no longer owns a 300wsm, but he does have a 223wssm that he is having a very hard time finding ammo or brass for and he was wondering if it is possible to resize his stockpile of 300wsm down to the smaller 223wssm case.

I told him that it is probably more trouble than its worth, but I thought I would ask the professionals here

Mostly because I actually am interested if it could be done and how you would go about doing it. (purely interest though, I don't really have a desire to do all that work)

I see no reason why not, but you will need a series of dies to do it to that wide shoulder and a beefy press with a lot of leverage to keep from wearing yourself out in the process.

Hmmm. 1000 cases. Well, price the dies first, then see if it pays? It's possible. Compare that to selling the brass used and putting the returns toward new .223 WSM brass, assuming it's available.

223WSSM brass is available. Why worry about resizing, forming, neck reaming, etc? Just buy new brass, sell the old brass to fund the venture, if needed.

Scorch I basically told him the same thing that you suggested. But I thought I would ask the "how to" question here, just for pure interest. I like to learn new things and tinker, and I thought it might be a useful piece of information to have down the road, if I ever get into wildcatting.

I can see how resizing the neck would be done, but how would you go about shortening a case THAT much? There would have to be a lot of extra brass removed at some point. And how would you keep from getting a crinkled or super thick shoulder?
