Questions about Hogdon Longshot

I'll at least be using it for. 45 ACP and 9mm at first, especially .45 ACP 230 gr. ball.
I have been using Titegroup and W-W 231 but need something that delivers velocity in the 850+ fps range with the 230 ball and JHP.
What kind of consistancy does Longshot deliver?
What about metering?
Does it burn fairly clean?
Pressure?

Thanks,
PitBull

I've used Longshot in 45acp, 9mm, 44 mag when I've wanted performance that I couldn't get with Titegroup or HP38/W231. Has metered consistantly, burns clean, but does produce a pretty good fireball. Haven't decided if I like it better than HS6, but it's close.

Thanks, it sounds pretty promising except for the muzzle flash.

I agree with philbo. I use Longshot in 9mm, and I also find that it burns clean, meters very consistently, but you will definitely get a nice flame out the muzzle, as it is a slower burning powder than, say, 231.

I've noticed in a 10-round chrono test for one load with Longshot that there was only a 50 fps variance between the lowest and highest velocities, and I know for a fact the bullets I was using varied in weight by as much as a couple of grains. Now, I don't know if that's what I would call competition consistency, but it's pretty reasonable as far as I'm concerned.

Hope that helps.

I think I will try Longshot. Yesterday I was shooting some 200 gr jacketed SWC's with max loads of Titegroup and was getting really flat primers. If I used max loads of this with the 230 gr ball rounds I'd be too far below the velocity I'm looking for.

Thanks for your help.

For .45 acp I've had excellent results with Unique an AA#5 with 185-230gr Jacketed bullets.

I've used Unique before but it meters kind of rough. My objective is to develope and load up 1000+ rds of 230 gr ball and 500 230 gr JHP's to seal up and stash away just in case. They need to have the velocity of military ball for my peace of mind.
Given the intended purpose, I'd like something with minimal muzzle flash but I'm being told that Longshot has substantial muzzle flash. (I'm starting to picture it being like Alliant Blue Dot except Blue Dot meters rough).
Oh well, I guess there's gotta be a tradeoff somewhere.

I was at the reloading store and decided to give Accurate#5 a try. It's the first time I've ever used Accurate Powder of any type. AA#5 should give me the velocity I'm looking for with room to spare. I'll find out next trip to the range whether I can get decent groups with it as well.
