.308 with H414 magnum primers?
I am loading a bunch of .308s and I have used up my 3031 and 4064. I have a line on some H414 BUT my manual sates that I should use Magnum Primers for H414 in .308s. I already have cases primed as I had hundreds to get done and I had plenty of LRPs and the 3031 and 4064 do not require Magnum LRPs so I am wondering.......
Anyone load .308 with H414 and use LRPs. I have used H414 for 25-35 and .32 Winchester Specials but those do not require Magnum LRPs Last edited by hartcreek; July 6, 2014 at 05:05 PM. Reason: cuz |

I use H414 in a 22-250 with standard primers and no issues

Hmmm
243 That could be the answer as I did more digging in my loading manuals and I found weights up to 46 grains of H414 still using LRPs. I will need 52 grains for .308......maybe I can find some differnt powder tomorrow.

Got it handled
Thanks guys for all your help. I made come calls and chased down a rural gunshop that had powder. I could have cleaned out everything they had and they could get what ever was wanted and have a source for powder.
I wound up buying two screws to get a .308 Mossberg dialed in and three pounds of H414 and one pound of 4350 so I could finish up the primed cases. Once back in town I picked up 500 magnum LRPs so I can use the H414 in .308 and 30-06. The surprising thing is the powder costs were the same as in town but the primers were a buck more a tray so I passed and bought my primers at Bimart. I now have 380 .308 loaded using three different powders with bullets that are jacketed and hardcast and close bc that will give me a muzzle velocity of 2500- 2600fps. For a bolt action hunting rifle that is enough. When I first switched to Dot powders for pistols I encountered that step fireing because of the dual base nature of the loading powder that used nitroglycerine and nitrocelulose. I could actually feel the two accelerations when I shot. |
