Kentucky rifle or not?

kentucky or hawkins rifle ??

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I come across a old muzzle loader. Trying to find out some info on it. The forearm is just half way up barrel. The barrel is marked L P WOLF on top. The side plate has H ? ? WELL WARRENTED. Brass trigger guard. Double trigger, the first is straight. The barrel is octagon and 37 1/4 inches long. Someone told me it was a .41 caliber? Gun is very heavy. Anyone have any help? long rifle.jpg

Its a plains style rifle. It looks like the side plate has been replaced or covered over, probably to reinforce a crack.

HH is right.
It would require closer examination to find who the maker was. Probably made 1830 to 1860.
Unless the maker is special for some reason, value would not be very great.

The warranted marked locks didn't come about til 1840 or so but they were still making percussion guns up until around WWI so its anybody's guess unless you can track down the years the maker was in business. Like Rifleman said value isn't usually very much on those old guns unless its by a well known maker or has some sort of historical provenance. Usually a few hundred bucks in good shape. That side plate will hurt value a good bit even if the stock isn't cracked. All those extra holes is just as bad if not worse.

How do I go about finding out the maker of the gun? The name on top of the barrel, is that just the name of the guy that made the barrel?

Could be the gun builder or the guy that originally owned it.
