6mm /243 Win 748 powder?

I searched and found 2 previous threads for 748 used in 6mm Rem or 243 and a few members said 748 is too fast. I own a 18" barrel 6mm Rem Model Seven. My very first load I made for this gun was 36gr of IMR 4064 shooting a 100gr Sierra spitzer. I was pleasently surprised shooting holes in holes. The problem is I only have one pound of 4064 and I have 8 pounds of 748 and 8 pounds of IMR 4895. I like the 4895 for my LR-308. Should I try to use the 748 for the 6mm or use the 4895 for the 6mm and start loading 748 for the 308? Really I just would like some experienced loaders with the 6mm rounds pipe in with some real data. Like I said the previous threads said 748 is too fast. But according to Hodgdon, it is slower than 4064 so it should shoot nicely. Maybe I already answered my own question (and ignored the know it all posters) and should start loading up the 748. What do think?

I don't load either, but looking in the manual... I'd say your IMR4895 and 748 both should work well in 308.

As for your 6mm...if it were me, I'd look at the chart and choose again.

7th ed. Hornady manual recommends IMR 4064 and VIHT N-160.

If I were you, I'd go buy a 1 pounder and try it.

Also it shows Reloader 15 right in the middle of the list for most bullets. I've had very good results with RL 15 in 223 rem. Ya might try this to.

QuickLOAD says your 36 grain load of IMR 4064 will have a barrel time of 1.064 ms in an 18" tube. I'll stay with that, since it produced good results for you already. It then says 35.6 grains of IMR.4895 will give you the same barrel time at slightly lower pressure, and between 36.4 and 36.5 grains of 748 will do it. Your 4064 load fills 83% of the space under the bullet. The 4895 load will fill 80%, and the 748 load will fill only 73% (it's pretty dense). None of these loads appears to be any more than a starting load, ranging from 46.400 to 48,600 psi using QuickLOAD's default case capacity and 2.835" COL.

The same loads in the .243 Win give 48,500 psi to 50,700 psi, seated to 2.710 COL. A little closer to normal pressure for this round, but still not heavy. Again, this is with the program's default case capacity. Your's is likeely to be larger and the pressures lower.

The eyeball says 748 fills the case too poorly for best accuracy. Magnum primers should be used with all these low fill loads for ignition consistency. It looks to me like H4350 would be a good powder to work with in both rounds and will fill the cases better and let you move to standard primers.

In my .308, 748 gives a large muzzle flash, particularly in top loads.

Yeah, I did notice that the 4064 didn't fill the case all that much. I don't have any magnum primers. Let me know of a mag primer retailer with stock. I can definitely add more powder as I notice less "kick" compared to factory loads. But I like the less kick as this light rifle will kick you pretty hard.

GeauxTide talked of muzzleflash. The factory loads for the 6mm put out the most muzzle flash that I have ever seen. It is an 18" barrel, but the flash that I see in the scope make the entire view disappear with bright light and then you loose your target. I may not like the 748.

I think I may start using the 748 for the 308 and try the 4895 for the 6mm. If it doesn't work, I may go back to the 4064 and buy more or I might buy something new such as H414 or try the 4350. It seems powder is finally available again. I bought all of my powder a year ago when it was like $118 for 8lbs. By the way, the 308 is for strictly target shooting and the 6mm is mostly for hunting deer.

I"ve been shooting the 6mm for about 30 years now and re-loading since 1976 My favorite load is 41gr of 4895 with a 70gr sierra HPBT-match bullet for around 3400fps. It has proven to be a hole in hole load. got the load from sierra in 1971. I never had to much luck with the heavy bullets. keep it in the ten ring/charlie sierra.

Confirmed shooter, you got a 1:12 twist? or the 1:9? I am pretty sure mine is a 1:9 as it shoots 100gr bullets pretty good. I haven't tried the lighter loads though. My gun is a Rem Model Seven that I got as a hand me down from my grandfather. It has the best trigger I have ever shot. Must have worked on as it is super crisp. I beleive that is why it shoots so well.

I've had pretty good success with Win 748 and the .308Win with 150-168 gr bullets. I haven't had any muzzle flash issues as previously mentioned, but mine's got a 26 in barrel.
