As a member of SNM (Sons of Neanderthal Man) I always recommend a steel frame-the CZ for current production...
Or a CZ clone like my SAR-K2 14 rnd hi-cap .45.

I really like the ergos on the HK45c, FWIW.

The ability to take a fullsize weapon light is definitely a plus for the fullsize though.
Yeah I actually do too, just like the HK45 more. The HK45c/P2000 grip is still one of the best out there.

When talking about HK's .45ACP lineup, its like discussing the worst of the best, whereas talking about the other stuff tends to be the best of the worst.

Let me suggest another 1911 gun. If you have a full size 1911 try a Commander or Officers. Also a 625 revolver is a fun gun. I finally decided that of the semi autos the 1911 works best for me. I just shoot better with it.

I wondered when somebody was going to mention a revolver.

Take a look at Ruger's Bisley Convertible. Ya get two cylinders;
.45ACP and .45 Colt. Love mine.

Try the Glock 21sf in gen 3 or the G21 gen four with the adjustable back. The S&W M&P in 45acp is also a good choice. Both are on sale regularly in my area. Lots of parts and mags readily available. My choice would be the gen 4 G21.

I would avoid the Sprigfield XD series. I had the XDS in 45 that had serious feeding issues. My bud has a regular XD with the same issues.

CZ 97 BD is on my short list.

Kleab: Please tell me more. I have a XD9sc that has never had feed problems....even with TulAmmo. Are you using factory mags?

Kleab, I am also interested in hearing about what feed problems you had with your XDS.

I have an XDS that performs very well.

Agree with Thump and Tunnel as well as with Scotchman. HK45, a full size .45 with 10 round magazines or Hk45C....the perfect .45 for me. It's soft shootin' for a .45, no doubt. The .45c is good for range, home defense and carry. It's reliable and accurate holding 8-10 rounds depending on your magazine choice. Comes with interchangeable back strap for personalized grip fit. Light LEM trigger, which I really like. Another trigger configuration is DA/SA with long heavy first pull and/or cocked and locked a la 1911, if preferred. Medium heavy LEM trigger is a possibility as well. It's an HK which means high quality and durable construction. Easy take-down and easy to clean. Threaded barrels available for use with a suppressor, if desired. What more can you ask for? The USP is a magnificent pistol. Its grip is just a little too big and blocky for me. If you have hands on the large side, it can't be beat. You owe it to yourself to hold and, if possible, fire all of the HK models. I bet you'll be hooked.

Ok I went to the range yesterday and shot 170 rounds through the HK45.
Not a single hiccup. It shoots better than I do and recoils less than a full size 1911.
This gun is a keeper.
Mine is a V1 which is DA/SA with a safety.
I'd love to try a light LEM given the chance.

Love the HK45. Feeds and fires any load. Excellent ergo's that are very similar to a 1911 as far as grip circumference and trigger reach.

I love my XD45!

It has been totally reliable, very accurate, more rugged than I'll ever need, and I like the trigger and grip better than the Glock 21.

Seen here with some Remington Golden Saber 185g .45ACP+P.

Pops,
You did say "something different." When I carry any of my three main .45 autos (Kahr PM45, S&W Shorty .45 & Glock 36) I also carry this .45 derringer. It has been 100% reliable and fits into a boot or pocket.

I have always felt that two guns offer better dependibility than ANY one brand or model. That's why I carried a .22 magnum High Standard derringer with me for my entire PD service. Thankfully, I never needed to use my back-up gun but I would have felt more comfortable carrying a powerful, well designed gun like this if it had been available 40 years ago.

Re: I want a 45 acp handgun. What are my options?

My non-1911 .45acp decision for me: s&w m&p full-sized and keep my ruger p97dc. Sold the hk usp 45c and sig p220. Was more accurate with ruger p97 than either of those. Not saying a ruger is more accurate. I'm sayin I was more accurate with it. No p97 made any more.

Glock, sig & cz97 were too thick in my hand: regarding trigger reach. Sig with newer grip style works.

Dad loves his Xdm.

Lots of choices. If hk45 works for you they are great.

Good luck.

Unlike the new Sigs which use the cheaper MIM parts to save the money and increase their profits I would look into the H&K or Glock. Glock carries 65% of the police market for a good reason. They work!

What I really like is the Colt CCO with a Commander barrel/slide and an Officer frame. That or an older P220 Sig would be my older choice. The HK while a great gun just does not feel comfortable in my hand

HK and Glock also use cheaper MIM parts to save money and increase their profits. The Glock MIM extractor used in new Glocks and the associated problems with it is why I will never sell my Gen 2 Glock 19.

I am also researching .45 ACP.

I am left handed and have definite need for some lefty controls.

I am researching the FNH FNX .45 and the Bersa Thunder 45 UC Pro. I have the FNH .40 and the Bersa 9mm and they are very enjoyable to me so I started my search with their .45 brothers. Magazines for the Bersa are very hard to find in 9mm.

I just got an XDm 45 Compact 3.8. It serves double duty as a CCW weapon with the short mag and a HD/Duty gun with the full size mags. I put the first 200 rounds through it yesterday and it performed perfectly. I couldn't get a round to it out of the black even with rapid fire at 25 yards.

This gun is amazing!!! I couldn't be happier with this gun!

Picture is my gun with the target of my first 10 shots at 25 feet.

All the HK pistols have either an amibi version or a lefty version available.
All the current .45 HK pistols have the ambi mag release and the HK45 and HK45C have ambi slide release standard.
Make it the LEM version and it's fully ambi.

For "something different", well-made, reliable, accurate and chambered in .45 ACP, you might want to take a look at one of my favorite pistols-the S&W Model 945. I concede that finding spare magazines for this pistol might take a little more looking than it would be for other much more common guns.

Since you have a 1911, you should look for a minty, w. german SIG 220. Then you'd have the two greatest 45's ever.
