That's because its too slow for the Hornet case size at that bullet weight. Even a 5% compressed load barely makes it to the starting pressure range in QuickLOAD. Alliant does have a load of 11 grains using a CCI 500 pistol primer listed, but the velocity is pretty underwhelming as a result of the burning rate problem. The one powder you hear raved about as the perfect fit for that round is Hodgdon Lil' Gun.
I've never owned a hornet myself but have read a number of discussions from which I've gleaned that it is important to use a really mild primer like the Remington 6 1/2. (So, maybe the Wolf or RWS small rifle primers would work, too?) Apparently, in that small volume with the limited grip of the thin case neck, a warm primer can unseat the bullet before the powder gets burning well, leading to irregular ignition and velocity, and thence to poor grouping.

steve's reloading pages
i would not try to reinvent the wheel. load up with lilgun. level case with lilgun, 35 grain vmax, small pistol primer and lee factory crimp.
steve lists loads of rl7 for 40 and 45 grain bullets. for rl7, 9.6 grains was his starting load with the 45 grain bullet. |

my favorite loads are fueled with 2400 and h110...ignited by a small pistol primer instead of small rifle.

I'll second H110 for the Hornet.

W296 and H110 work quite well in my 77/22 Hornet. Its seems to prefer 40 and 45 grain bullets, at about 2,700-2,800 fps for best accuracy.
My best load is 10.5 grains of W296 with a 40 grain Speer soft point (approx. 2,700 fps). It will shoot 0.5" groups, and point of aim out to 200 yds all day long.
