I will probably buy a 1891/30 Mosin Nagant soon and would like any information that anyone might offer concerning what to look for and where. I prefer the longer barrel versions of Mosin-Nagants for long range accuracy. I have looked at these things but I have never shot one. Any first hand experiences and advice would be appreciated.

Definitely go with the long barrel as the kick on those short barrel carbines are brutal. I'm no glutton for punishment and the the M44 carbines do deliver. Also try to get a Finnish one as opposed to any other nationality. Besides resorting to foreign barreks, special attention was paid to fitting of the wood made the Finnish Mosin Nagants the most accurate off the shelf Mosin Nagants issued. Finnish Army standards were 1.5" M.O.A. at 100 meters.
For a good read, try Rifles of White Death by Doug Bowswer. I haven't read Lapin's The Mosin Nagant Rifle but it's suppose to be authoritive. There's also some good websites out there including: http://www.mosin-nagant.net/ http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/ Buy Finn, you won't regret it. I'm buying Russian Snipers from Empire Arms myself. They're $600 right now. |

A friend of mine has a Russian rifle that I fired today. I believe it to be a Mosin Nagant.
He didn't know much about it. He wanted me to do some investigating for him. Can I email anyone a pic of his weapon and you tell me what it is? It has the "hammer & sicle" emblem engraved on it and the number "1942" right in front of the chamber on the barrel. That is all I know about it.

I have an M44 and like the poster above said it kicks and barks loud. Mine is 3 inches at a 100 yards with the bayonet on. They have a steel butt cap.
On the real plus side of any of these gun you can buy right now 880 rounds of ammo for $65. I don't care how bad it kicks at that price to shoot 25 |

my brother got one a few weeks ago and it is a blast to shoot. for some reason i shot a smaller group standing up free handed than when i was sitting and bench resting it. probably a fluke.
but anyways definately go get one; they're worth every penny. just look for one with good rifling and a shiny bore.

This is my favorite Mosin-Nagant website: http://7.62x54r.net/
I have a 1942 Izzy 91/30 and a 1948 Izzy M44. The 91/30 is one of my favorite rifles to shoot. As pointed out, ammo is cheap. A slip-on recoil pad is also very good to have in the range bag! TK |

I must just not be recoil sensitive because I don't think that an M44 kicks that hard. Of course I learned to shoot with a shotgun which kicks harder than any rifle I've ever fired so I guess it all depends on what one is used to.

The kick, when compared to another similar round, is harsh. Compare it to a safari gun, well maybe not so much. They are cheap, the ammo is cheap and easy to find. basic cost <$100, sniper models more.

another good source of information
is surplusrifle.com. I picked up an M-38 at Big 5 for 80$ that shoots well. There are plenty of aftermarket accessories for these guns. My plans include refinishing the stock and putting the wood in storage. Im going to put the action in an ATI stock, add a long eye relief scope and shoot the hell out of it.
