338 Win Mag... getting ready to play...
at the last gun show, I picked up around 350ish nickel Federal cases that were missing flash holes... I've now got around 350 good cases, since they were new unfired, & now have flash holes, to add to my 150 - 200 once fired Federal nickel cases... so with close to 500 case to load, I'm thinking the 300 yard target backer on my range, & my Browning Stainless Stalker with BOSS are going to need a work out towards fall...
so anyone gotten diecent accuracy out of any reasonably priced hunting grade bullets, care to give out a good starting recipe ??? I'm looking to shoot some groups off the bench later this summer

72.5 gr of 4350 behind a 200 gr Speer hot core with a CCI 250 mag primer. (max load) After you have shot a few of your new cases, try inserting a bullet in the neck of the fired case by hand. You may be surprised to see they won't go on some nickel plated cases. I believe the manufacturers plate over standard cases which may make the neck too thick. If the bullet won't pass, you need to ream the neck to prevent excess pressure and feeding problems. Test your Federal cases as well. If you are not looking for bench rest accuracy, you can simply run them over a slightly undersized drill bit in a press. A couple of passes and they should admit a bullet. Remember this is on a fired case.

Don't know if you would call these bullets reasonably priced, but my loads are:
200 Nosler Accubond/73.0 grains IMR4350 - Avg 2,960 225 Nosler Accubond/71.5 grains IMR4350 or 74.0 grains Reloder19 - Avg 2,800 250 Sierra Gameking/71.2 grains Reloder19 - Avg 2,700 All use CCI 250 primers. All are published maximum loads, so back off and work up. All of these are accurate in my Savage Weather Warrior. Good luck with the plated cases; I don't use them. |
