Don't fret, I'm not even considering buying one.

I've heard stories that the Colt Cowboy is made, in part, by Ruger. Is it a two screw frame gun with transfer bar like the Ruger Vaquero or is it assembled from Italian parts?

It is my understanding that the transfer bar safety has been loaned to Colt by Ruger in exchange for a royalty payment. This does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling - did Colt lay off every competent engineer they had?

The transfer bar is the only system which allows a chamber under the hammer to be loaded. It lets six shooters load 6 rounds instead of 5.

I agree that the Colt is way overpriced. I have also heard that Colt contracts with Italian suppliers to produce it's SA line. Bet old Sam Colt is spinning in his grave.

Ruger did license the transfer bar system to Colt for use in the Cowboy. On the few I've seen, the fit and finish left something to be desired. Get the Vaquero-it's the better gun for half the price.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Rest assured, I was just curious and wasn't thinking of getting a Colt (Rich would be pissed). My one Colt SAA (2nd Gen. in 38 spec) is more than enough.

Not that I feel like resurrecting a ten year old thread for the heck of it- I just don't want to make a new thread.

But this evening I acquired a Colt Cowboy for what I think was a good trade.

This gun is possibly the ugliest made by Colt and the hammer comes down too far so as not to be pleasant to shoot!
Anyone have an idea as to exactly how many of these were made?

Ten years old and still wrong.

It's actually right when we're talking about the brief runs of percussion replicas Colt did in the 1970s and I think '80s, and the Colt Cowboy.

It's NOT correct for the Colt SAA.

It's true of the 2nd and 3rd generation percussion guns but not the SAA or the Cowboy.
