remington 9mm load

today I purchased some Remington 115grn JHP 9mm bullets as this was the only JHP 9mm bullets at the store. I was wondering if any one has loaded these before using unique powder. I also have some 231 powder but perhaps this powder is to fast for a moderate velocity load. I use 4.5 grains of 231 in a target load with a 115 grain berrys or win fmj bullet but I don't know if I could approximate a factory load using this powder.

I have not loaded a 115 with Unique. Would be a good combination though.

Don't sell W231 short for this application. W231 is not too fast to push those light 115's to defense velocities. It'll do it no problem.

Yes, Unique would make 'em go faster; but I think you'd be surprised at W231's performance in this application - especially if the gun you're shooting has a short barrel (reduced flash and recoil over slower powders in a shorty).

Dug up some chronograph data

I accessed my chrono data to see what I had for W231/115's. Keep in mind that I don't load a lot of 9mm (and mostly 124's at that); and I have a lot of unfinished load work ups for this chambering. I have tons of factory 9mm, and I only shoot 9mm for CCW practice. So I don't spend a lot of time at the load bench with 9mm.

With a 115g Hornady FMJ, I've loaded 4.6g W231; CCI500:

1068 fps through a Kahr CW9 3.7" bbl
1124 fps through a Beretta 92fs 5" bbl

Notes state: "Consider increasing."
Speer #14 maxes at 4.9g.

So as you can see, W231 easily propels 115's to "moderate velocities," to say the least. I think these velocities are approaching defense suitability.

More data

With a 115g Hornady FMJ, I've loaded 4.6g W231; CCI500:
(same data as previous post)
1068 fps through a Kahr CW9 3.7" bbl
1124 fps through a Beretta 92fs 5" bbl

With Remington's 115g general purpose FMJ:

1066 fps through a Kahr CW9 3.7" bbl
1131 fps through a Beretta 92fs 5" bbl

With Winchester "White Box" general purpose 115 FMJ:

1130 fps through a Kahr CW9 3.7" bbl
1216 fps through a Beretta 92fs 5" bbl

So 4.6g W231 does approximate Remington's gp round, but falls short of WWB's performance.

Data is always good. You get to decide from here
