Walther Mags: Like Looking for Unicorns

Hi all,
Simple enough. Walther magazines, where have you gone? They've always been somewhat scarce, but right now they're nowhere to be found. I've checked all the online retailers I usually use. I'd check local stores but they've never really stocked them. I noticed Walther Arms, now that they have their own US presence separate from S&W, also has an online store but they only have magazines for some of the 22s they make. I'm looking for P99 magazines. I can find some online but people are asking crazy prices. I know the industry is still dealing with the aftermath of the scare, but a lot of the companies seem to have caught up. Not so much Walther. I was hoping having a true US presence might help them with this, of course they likely need more time to get established. Anyone have a decent source out there?

I'm almost sure this post won't be helpful...
But wasn't the Walther P99 the combination project with Smith & Wesson and their SW99? Is it possible the magazines are the same and perhaps running your searches based on the Smith & Wesson product other than the Walther project helps a bit?

I have no real idea, but get the sense that the Walther was the more popular product of the two.

Ahhh, I reminisce to a day just 4-5-6 years ago where you could punch up CDNN and be blasted in the face with magazines.

Yep, SW99 mags will work in a P99. Also, Magnum Research makes a licensed version of the P99 that has much more plentiful mags. I have 6 of the MR 15 rounders for my P99 and they work just fine, plus they only cost $35 instead of $50 for OEM Walthers. They're all made my MecGar anyways. Hope that helps!

Yea I know about the Magnum Research mags but I haven't seen those available online either .

Edit: Actually I can find them on Magnum Research's website, though they say they won't work in the PPQ. I wonder if they mean the PPQ M2?

These work perfectly with P99s and first-gen PPQs (PPQ M1). They will not work in the PPQ M2. Which is why I will not purchase a PPQ M2. Walther was foolish to change the mag design.

I own several of the Magnum research mags. They are made by Mec-Gar (as are OEM Walther mags) and are identical to the Walther mags, aside from the name molded on the baseplate. Excellent mags all-around. There is no reason to pay inflated Walther prices for the exact same mags.

They are not that hard to find. I went to a LGS looking for an extra mag for my PPQ M1. They only had the P-99 in stock so I ended up getting one of those since it fits my gun.

They were tougher to find a few months back, but I see them around now.

I just picked up a few of the small flush magazines for the PPS in .40 S&W. I didn't notice them being especially rare but I did notice a radically inflated price on several sites. I saw them going for upwards of $70 at a few places but I got mine for $30-something a piece at Cheaper than Dirt . (I think LG Outdoors had them at a good price too.) I read somewhere that this particular magazine was recently discontinued. Does anyone know if that is true?

I felt that I would never find extra mags for my favorite PPQ M2 so when the blogs said there were some available at Walther, I called them and purchased 3 more and had a total of 5. Well later Midway sent an email that more were available from them and had a limit of 2, I ordered 2 more. They are 17 rounders and I will keep them for sure. Love that M2 pistol.

Okay so it does sound like they are getting in magazines, just somewhat sporadically and you have to be on your toes. I can live with that.

I have no problem with the MRI mags as they are essentially the same thing. I just like to know that official support from the manufacturer is available too.

Yeah, but thought you'd like to see the lower prices from the other vendors as well. I've used ManVentureSupply before to buy the MRI/Walther mags. Their prices are low and shipping is super-fast. The old complaint about Walther mags was the price, but ManVentureSupply pushes those mags down to near-Glock-mag prices!

Nice one, Dale! The poor guy is probably wondering how to make springs....

When I bought a P99AS several years back, I bought several S&W99 used police magazines for it, from CDNN I think it was. That was a smart move as I haven't seen them listed for years. But they must be out there, somewhere, maybe right next to Fox Mulder's "truth".

That P99AS is the only .40 caliber pistol I hung onto, although it was hard to choose between it and the Beretta Px4. If only there was a P99 with that Beretta rotating barrel design!

Magnum Research makes a licensed version of the P99

Not according to the MR website. That polymer pistol is a Baby Eagle / Jericho derivative. Hammer fired. Decocking rotary safety lever on the slide. There's no Walther DNA in that one.

They were smart to use an existing magazine design.

I like the way that the MR version has a slide styled after the Walther, rather than the S&W version. It just seems better looking to me.

No. The mags these guns use WILL NOT work in a P99/PPQ M1 without significant modification, due to the different mag release location and different baseplate shape.

The Canik 55 TP-9 looks like a P99, but is not a true licensed copy like the S&W SW99 or Magnum Research MR9.
