Been sent back for what?
They could have been sent back to Marlin or the distributor because they were not selling and eating up inventory money/space...

QC problems
Remington bought Marlin out and moved the plant--most Marlin workers would not relocate--Remington is having huge QC issues and as I understand it stopped producing CF Marlins..for now, until the QC issues are addressed.

I'm trying to read between the lines !!
What implications if any, would this have on an older Pre-Safety 1894C?

Interestingly, I just tried ordering one through Dick's Sporting Goods in Illinois, and got told the same thing. I guess it's either Gunbroker or wait a while
