HP-38 is a little on the fast side to be loading that high intensity bottle necked pistol round. It works best with slower powders like H-110, Blu-dot or alliant- 2400. HP-38 could be used, but you won't reach full potential before you reach too high pressure. I doubt it would function the slide fully.

Welcome to TFL. Where are you from?

Software Says: 5.4gr HP38 for 85gr FMJ in 7.62x25mm

Always check data from other people here, but I checked the question with a software package (QuickLoad) that I use.

The maximum charge, according to the program, is 5.4 grains of HP38 for this cartridge using an 85 grain full metal jacket bullet (.308, 85 grain, Sierra FMJ RN 8005). I believe 8005 is the stock number for this bullet. The velocity is 390 meters per second with a 10 cm barrel.

Tschuess,
