CZ 550s. The Standard vs the Varmint

I like the heavier barrelled rifles around. The straight barrel of the Varmint model, to me, is more pleasing to the eye than the tapering profile of my 550 Standard.

But what exactly, apart from that fine, meaty barrel, does a Varmint give you, that a Standard does not?

It is heavier, carries fewer cartridges and has not iron sights as an alternative.

Can't say I can realistically afford one, right now, but if I were to upgrade, it would more likely be the CZ Varmint, than some of the Steyr Mannlichers that I have been drooling over at twice the price... It would be nice to know what it is they can do better...

Accuracy. I have a CZ452 Varmint, Rem. 700 LTR 308, both are short heavy barreled, also liked the look . Shorter heavy barrels have less vibration ( barrel whip ) which makes them more accurate & barrel doesn't heat up as fast. IMO can't go wrong with the varmint. Be Safe Chris

My CZ550 V in 308 has a very long barrel as well as a fatter one. It is not particularly well balanced, it is muzzle heavy, and heavy overall. If I were to carry this rifle in the field, I would choose the standard profile barrel.

I use mine at the range, and enjoy plinking at distances up to 800 yards. I don't carry it very far, and shoot it a great deal.

There are many features of the CZ that I really appreciate. One is in the short action you can buy 10 round detachable box magazines. Mind you these are some really nice magazines. The maglatch is in the front of the trigger guard bow, where the safety is on the Garand/ M14. These things go in easily and eject very smoothly. They have a rubber gripping surface incorporated into them, and a scissor type spring. They are comparatively short versus some I have seen hanging from aftermarket conversions of Remington 700s. They are double stack, center feed, magazines. They take a few minutes to load, but they slide those cartridges right under the CRF claw.

The set trigger is a nice feature, although I so rarely use that feature. The CHF barrel is a real ringer. I love the walnut stock, which has a nice slender wrist.

It is a quality piece. I really like mine.

Picked up a CZ 550 International in 6.5X55 Swede about a month ago and I am truly impressed with the little gun. Fact is I don't think I have ever shouldered a rifle that pointed and came up as naturally as it does. I really like the single set trigger in it as well.

Acquired another Mannlicher stocked gun in a Ruger No.1 International in 30'06 as well, now that is a compact, fast handling and natural pointing gun too.
