My first USPSA match and my mistakes...

I'm passing along the "oops" I made in my first match so others can learn from my mistakes.

1. Even after the stage walk through memorizing target placement and reload spots, I went past a couple hidden targets. Big penalty!

2. I had a few slide locks, obviously shooting all ten rounds instead of reloading after eight shots.

3. Something totally unexpected happened while running down a lane towards the targets. Two of my magazines actually fell out of the holder.

Super big penalty! I use Comp-Tac holders and they were not tightened enough. Luckily, I brought the tiny allen wrench to snug them up. Hopefully, this post will help other new shooters and alert them to mistakes that cost negative points towards your score.

I also wasn't aware the RO (during the course of fire) could not tell you to retreive the mags that popped out. Afterwards, he showed me the proper technique to walk back safely and pick up the mags, so I could have continued on to finish the stage. All in all, it was fun, safe and an enjoyable weekend day.

One final observations. New shooters don't feel so inadequate when you see the top race gun shooters screw up as well, even at the start of the buzzer.

Don't worry with plenty of practice you'll solve these issues and find a whole new collection to make.

I've been shooting IPSC for 12+ years and every shoot seems to be an exercise in how many mistakes you can find with your performance. The idea is eventually to make less mistakes than the others shooting the competition.
Some times you can.

Competitions are easy to lose at, but it's all good fun.

mistakes..

ha..

this past match...I was clearing a malfunction..dropped my mag..went to reload..hit one of the othe mags on my belt..it fell into the sand..finished the array of targets..went to reload for the next array, shot those..went to grab another mag ..realized I was empty on my belt, ( had another 12 rounds to shoot)..looked down to pick the full mag up..and saw four mags in the sand..two were empty, one half full, one full..

oh..which one to pick out of the SAND...

My first threegun match I had prepared in my mind how I was going to shoot the course. It was a handgun then shotgun course. I did great with my handgun but felt a bit behind time wise and once I grabbed my shotgun I got a brain fart and forgot how I wanted to shoot the course. I forgot to top off while walking to a point that would allow enough angle to engage some hidden targets and I completely missed (didn't shoot at) 2 targets. I was roasted by my friends until they did the same thing. It was a hoot though.
