Scoping an out of production T/C ML
Hey everyone, been lurking around the reloading forum a little bit and this is my first post on TFL not sure if I should post this Topic on here or in the smithy forum but here goes.
I own a T/C TreeHawk .50 cal ML carbine. it's been out of production for a few years I guess and love shooting it even though I only ever get to do so when I am down on my fiance's parent's farm land in AR. I would love to put a scope on it but it does not have either a) pre installed mounts or a dovetail mount. Apparently it is possible to mount on on the iron sight base but there is only one set of holes not two (ie 2 instead 4) i'm pretty sure I can't just drill and tap new holes as the metal doesn't look particularly strong and i don't know about whether that would be dangerous or not because I use loose pyrodex charges at 70 gr and #11 caps. any advice would be appreciated for the record if it is of any importance I use 250gr pure lead LEE REAL bullets |

A gunsmith can drill and tap virtually any barrel for a scope mount, such as for Weaver bases or a rail. Sometimes the hammer can get the way if the scope isn't mounted high enough or offset.
There's a see through scope mount from Ironsighter that utilizes the existing sight holes that will fit some TC models, but I don't know if it will work with the Tree Hawk. http://www.ironsighter.com/ And Dixie Gun Works sells Quic-kee magnetic clamp on scope mounts for both the 15/16" and 1" octagon barrels. http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product...oducts_id=7612 http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product...oducts_id=7613 More info: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthrea...ighlight=mount Last edited by arcticap; July 28, 2011 at 08:40 PM. |

TC, most always provided a way on these.
Don't know if you can still find one as it would have to be used. TC, use to make a base or sorts that would replace the rear sight. Then the scope had a clamp that fit that base. They also make a whole bunch of adaptors for mouning a scope, on a side-lock. If you will give me a little time, I can look through my old catalogs and bases that I have and see if I can provide additional help. Now, it's not a big deal to drill and tap, especially this model but wait and let me see what I can come up with. .....

I don't know what that gun is. Must be an inline, I don't know anything about those.
But, I am curious, how can a piece of steel, like a barrel not "look" strong? |

Muzzleloader
Rifleman, the barrel is pot metal, and it's a sidelock.

TC is not into pot metal, ever. It's a sidelock short barrel, all camo round barrel. As reference, it looks somewhat like the TC White Mountain Carbine. TC is very much into investment castings. Pot metal is lead, tin other soft metals. Be Safe !!!

My mistake. I thought that the Treehawk had an octagon to round barrel. But I did find some photos of one.
http://test.auctionarms.com/closed/d...temnum=8465443 Apparently there is a TC scope mount and base adaptor for the Tree Hawk but I don't know where to find one. And at one time Kwik Site did make a scope mount for the Grey Hawk and Tree Hawk, part # KSM22198 "Kwik-Site Integral See-thru Blackpowder Mount and Ring Set, fit Gray Hawk, Tree Hawk, stainless $44", but not currently available on their website. http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/blackpow1.htm Last edited by arcticap; July 28, 2011 at 09:11 PM. |

apologies, haven't done my research on the barrel. thanks for everyone input on the subject, I think i am going to have to call T/C about it. my assumption is that it will have to be sent back to them to get the holes drilled. Where I live there aren't many gunsmiths around.

I doubt that drilling & tapping a barrel is factory authorized work at all.
I think that they will basically only perform repairs that maintain original or factory authorized specifications. Contact TC if you must, but I think that kind of work needs to be done by a private party. Any gunsmith can do it and you can find some online or in the Yellow Pages that are right in your own state. Discuss it with them on the phone and then send them the barrel if you trust them. But the scope will need to be mounted high to not interfere with the hammer, or the hammer will need an angle adjustment. That will most likely lift your cheek off of the stock when aiming. The TC factory scope mount is probably long out of production. That's something to ask TC about, part numbers for the base and ring insert and availability. Then you can begin searching using Google, on Gunbroker or on eBay to find a base and mount set for your Tree Hawk. Last edited by arcticap; July 29, 2011 at 09:25 PM. |

I'm in the same boat right now, just bought one from a buddy he didn't know what model it was. I paid $50. Seemed like a good deal, I removed the rear rail and it says tree hawk under there so that helps. it also came with w BSA deerhunter 2.5x20scope with rings but there is no way to mount it with the rail that was on it.

hey Chavo
That's my problem too, I can buy the scope mounts for it from Gunpartsussa, but I believe you will have to get some one to drill and tap the barrel for the screws. I've pretty much given up cause I don't want to mess up my barrel. You could call T/C and ask what they think/recommend. Have you shot it Yet? |

Have you thought about just getting another muzzleloader that is already drilled and tapped for a scope?

Do not under any circumstances touch or try to remove that little screw by the hammer that is what holds the hooked breech to the barrel.
My opinion is don't try to install a scope on it your self or getting an ML with a set of mounting holes already setup on it, a new Inline ML can cost as little as $225. Call T/C and see what they say. |

It's not the screw behind the hammer, my wife and I are heading out of state with my father today. I will post some pictures later it is already drilled and tapped.
