Springfield M1A
Thinking of acquiring one of these. Standard or Scout Squad and stock preference?

I vote for the Standard Model. That's the way the gun was designed to be.

Its really personal preference. I bought the Scout - I wanted something in the middle of the line (not as long as the standard but not as short as the socom). I know people who have the socom and love it because its compact, and some the Standard because its original and classic. Get what fits YOU best.

Barrel length depends on what you want to use the rifle for. If you want to use it while traveling through brush or other tight spaces then go with the shorter barrel, but for just plinking at the range or all around use I like the standard setup. I'd opt for a synthetic stock myself, but it's hard to beet the looks of wood.

Personally I like the long rifle myself but the short ones shoot well. The "loaded" model gives you a NM trigger, barrel and quasi NM sights. Buy it in wood and you can add a GI fiberglass stock very cheap.

I prefer the Scout length. I just like a handier weapon, and the balance of the Scout is just about perfect IMO.
For the Standard models, I prefer the wood stock, but the Scout and SOCOM I think look better with synthetic

Wow, I'm jealous of all of these pictures of flash hiders, magazines and pistol grips. We are not allowed to have them in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.
I think the Scout (with a traditional handguard) looks and feels the best! |

You can't go wrong with the 18.0" Bush/Scout M1A.
When I asked the same question many years ago, everyone told me get the standard... I thanked them for their opinions and purchased a Scout. I now own a 16.25", two 18.0" and three standard length configurations. The 18.0" is my personal favorite. Their are plenty of stocks to choose from, a tight fitting USGI synthetic with a reinforced fore end is really nice. I prefer a pistol grip and like the SAGE EBR, I'll also have a Blackfeather RS soon and it looks like a winner. Sold my AR-15 after I purchased my Scout... Sold my AR-10 to fund a custom built SEI M14... No regrets .

As much as you like the 6.5mm cartridges, build one...
Might be quite a while before I can do it but after my last Grendel project, a .260R upper for my RRA LAR-8 is next! T. |

I like the longer Standard length model better. I regret the synthetic stock, wish I had gone wood. Nothing wrong with a Match barrel & trigger to me. Not too far of a deviation from standard, and very useful without being gaudy.

And I speak highly.

I prefer the standard length. Get more range out of that big bullet. Plus the smaller version leads to a louder gun and a bigger flash.

I had a full match Springfield with every option except the rear lug. It was a beauty and I thought the world of it. Unfortunately, I could outscore it using an above average AR-15 with A2 and 20" barrel.
I used Sierra 168 grain Match Kings in the M1A and 69 grain Match Kings in the AR at 200 and 600 yards. The M1A wouldn't shoot with the AR (both with iron sights). I was pretty disappointed. The nice thing about the M1A is that I gave $1940 with extra mags ten years ago. I sold it this year for $1940. I can't complain. Flash |

I've been watching GB for a .260 upper for my AR-10. ArmaLite has offered the AR-10B in .260 for some time now, I'm sure I'll find one some day. The AR-10 has cut back the range time the M1A's see and doubled my 7.62 ammo consumption. |

They are all a pleasure to shoot, but I like the standard version with a wood stock. It's beautiful. It's what a battle rifle should look like.
