Walnut grip woodworking hints?

I've never done real woodworking, so I'm ignorant. I need to sand some corners down on the walnut grips of my Rhino to make it print less. Should I coat it with something to seal it and any other hints?

If you want you can stain and seal grips like any other piece of wood. You can then use boiled linseed oil for a "GI" look or spar varnish to give a factory look.

Permalyn sealer. I've used it with good success.

I apply a thin coat and let it dry. Apply until the pores are filled. Sand down with 220.

Then apply a coat and when it starts to get sticky, wipe it off. Let it dry thoroughly. Repeat until desired sheen is achieved.

It may be obvious but just in case: take the grips off the pistol before sanding.

Sand with the grain of the wood (basic woodworking).
Use a sanding block for control.
Clamp the grips in something that won't hurt the wood but will keep it from moving while sanding.
